COLUMBUS, Ohio-Four Ohio State women’s tennis doubles teams participated in the doubles draw at the annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships on Friday in Madison, Wis. All four squads were trying to advance in the 64-team draw. Three of the four OSU squads made it out of the first round and will compete in the round of 32 Saturday morning.
Paving the way for OSU was the tandem of Claudia Castro (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas) and Lindsey Adams (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and the duo of Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan). Both teams dominated their opposition, 8-1. Castro and Adams downed Kokz and Roemer of Northwestern while Pervez and Colville grounded Wisconsin Green Bay’s Wendorff and Gruszynski.
The pair of Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) and Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) played well for OSU as they felled Dorn and Watson of UW-Green Bay, 8-4.
The Buckeyes No. 1 team and No. 3 seed – Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West) and Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) – was the one OSU doubles team not to advance. The duo fell to Purdue’s Melissa Iqbal and Lara Burgarello, 8-8 (3).
Lindsay Bryan (Fr., New Orleans, La./Ursuline) participated in the second round of the qualifying singles consolation bracket. She defeated Teri Gonzaga of Wisconsin in a three-set thriller, 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.
Adams, Colville and Williams were eliminated from the qualifying singles draw Thursday. They were trying to be one of the eight participants out of 64 to qualify for the main singles draw, which begins Saturday. Four other Buckeyes-Rincon, Matko, Pervez and Fisk-received automatic bids into the main draw.
The annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships run from Thursday to Tuesday. OSU has five remaining players in singles competition and four doubles teams left in the draw. The duo of Rincon and Fisk will compete in the consolation bracket.
