Women’s Tennis Players Participate In ITA Event Qualifying Round – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Four Ohio State women’s tennis players participated in the qualifying round of the annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships on Thursday in Madison, Wis. All four were trying to qualify for the 64-person main singles draw, which begins Saturday at UW’s Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Eight out of the 64 participants in the qualifying round will advance to the main draw.
Four other Buckeyes-Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West), Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West), Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike)-received automatic bids into the main draw.
In the qualifying round, Lindsey Adams (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) won their first round matches to advance. Adams handily defeated Mara Sonkin of Valparasio, 6-1, 6-0, to move on. Williams dispatched Butler’s Olivia Pedro, 6-1, 6-3. In the second round both Adams and Williams were eliminated from the qualifying round and therefore will not participate in the main draw. Adams fell to the No. 4 seed Katie Cunha of Notre Dame, 6-0, 6-3 and Williams was dropped by Purdue’s Lara Burgarello, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Buckeyes Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) and Lindsay Bryan (Fr., New Orleans, La./Ursuline Academy) were felled in the first round of competition. Brandi Watts of Minnesota beat Colville, 6-0, 6-2 and Bryan was dropped, 6-2, 6-2, by Irina Strembitsky of Cleveland State. Both Buckeyes moved to the consolation bracket. Bryan won her first round match in the consolation bracket, 1-6, 6-1, 10-8, against Lianna Dorn of Wisconsin-Green Bay. In the second round Friday, she will play Wisconsin’s Teri Gonzaga. Colville was topped in the first round of the consolation bracket by No. 7 seed Jennifer Duprez of Michigan, 6-1, 6-3.
The annual 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships run from Thursday to Tuesday. OSU has five remaining players in singles competition and four doubles teams left in the draw. The doubles tournament begins Friday.
