COLUMBUS, Ohio- After a pitchers’ duel left game three of the Scarlet and Gray championship series scoreless after five innings, the international tiebreaker rule was enacted in the sixth inning in an effort to determine a winner.
A strikeout, a force out at home and fly out to left field by the visiting Gray team maintained the tie heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sarah West (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) ended the game with a single to left center field to score Chrissy Fowler (Sr., Utica, Ohio/Wright State), who was placed on third base because of the tie breaker.
Katie Chain (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) had eight strikeouts and allowed three hits, going the distance for the Scarlet. Jenn Elwell (Sr., Dearborn Heights, Mich/Divine Child) and allowed four hits in a complete-game effort for the Gray.
The Gray squad had tied the series at one game apiece by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of a game continued from Tuesday because an injury to Wendy Allen (So., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) had postponed the game. Allen had struck out 10 from the pitching circle and gone 3-for-4 with two doubles at the plate before suffering a sprained ankle when sliding into second base on her final hit.
It has yet to be determined if the series will be the best of three, which would conclude play, or best of five.
