Men’s Golf Begins 2001 Season Out West At The Ping Arizona Intercollegiate – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State men’s%^$golf team will begin tournament play in 2001 at the%^$Ping Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 29-30 at the Raven%^$Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The Buckeyes will play%^$a practice round Jan. 28. The first official round%^$will begin at 8 a.m. Jan. 29 with the second round%^$set to begin at 1p.m. Round 3 will carry over to%^$Jan. 30 at 8 a.m.%^$
%^$Teams competing in the tournament are Arizona,%^$Arizona State, Arkansas, California, Long%^$Beach State, UT El Paso, UC Irvine, New Mexico%^$State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Brigham%^$Young, University of Southern California, Stanford,%^$Tulsa, UCLA and Washington.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes next compete in the 2001%^$SunTrust Gator Invitational hosted by the University%^$of Florida at Gainesville, Fla . The tournament%^$will take place Feb. 12-13 at the University of%^$Florida Golf Course (par 70, 6,300 yards). The%^$teams competing are Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham,%^$Augusta State, Central Florida, College of%^$Charleston, North Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia%^$State, Kentucky, Louisiana State, Mississippi,%^$North Florida, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Ohio State.%^$

%^$Head coach Jim Brown will be taking to the%^$Ping Arizona Intercollegiate the top 5 golfers%^$from the Iron Duke Classic, the last tournament%^$played before the break in the season from%^$Oct.-Jan., but will look for changes in the competing%^$five throughout the season.%^$
%^$”Nothing is set in stone,” Brown said. “I am%^$going to strive to get the best five out there every%^$tournament.”%^$
%^$Mike Austin (Sr., Burton, Mich./Flint Powers%^$Catholic), Justin Collins (So., Ironton,%^$Ohio/Ironton), Chris Emanuel (Sr., Ottumwa,%^$Iowa/Ottumwa), Jason Oien (Jr., Westerville,%^$Ohio/Westerville) and David Wagenseller (Jr.,%^$Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) will be the competitors%^$in the upcoming Ping Arizona Intercollegiate%^$tournamet.%^$
%^$Last Time Out
%^$The Buckeyes played last in the Iron Duke%^$Golf Classic at Durham, N.C. Oct. 15-16 to%^$wrap up the fall 2000 season.The tournament%^$included competition from 18 teams. Ohio State%^$finished 17th, scoring 305-312-306=923.%^$Leading the Buckeyes was Mike Austin who%^$tied for 29th place, scoring 78-71-75=224. Chris%^$Emanuel, Jason Oien, Justin Collins and Brian Williams%^$also competed for the Buckeyes.%^$
%^$Duke also will play host to the NCAA Championship%^$May 30-June 2, 2001.%^$
%^$The Schedule
%^$The Buckeyes 2001 schedule will take the team%^$all over the country and to warm climates. This%^$season the Buckeyes will compete in the Western%^$Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif., April 2-3 for%^$the first time since the Buckeyes took the title in%^$1997.%^$
%^$”I like to make sure that each team gets to go to%^$some exciting places before they graduate,” Brown%^$said. “I keep that in mind when I am scheduling so%^$they have memorable experiences while playing on%^$the team.”%^$
%^$The Buckeyes also will be playing host to the%^$Kepler Intercollegiate at the Scarlet course April%^$14-15.%^$

%^$Head coach Jim Brown is in his 28th season%^$with the Buckeyes. He has had a longer OSU coaching%^$career than any other coach on the staff right%^$now.%^$
%^$Under Brown, OSU has won 16 Big Ten titles%^$and placed second in the conference eight times.%^$Last season OSU won the First Energy Intercollegiate%^$Invitational giving Brown 151 tournament wins%^$in his career. Brown led the Buckeyes to a National%^$Championship win in 1979.%^$
%^$Golf in January
%^$The Buckeyes may not have been competing%^$in tournaments over the winter months of Nov.-Jan.%^$but the team was lifting weights three times a week,%^$running and hitting balls every day in preparation for%^$the 2001 season.%^$
%^$The unusually warm winter days last week%^$gave the Buckeyes a chance to play.%^$”Anytime we get a chance to play golf in the%^$winter it is definitely a bonus,” Brown said.
