Women’s Tennis Completes Day One of Eck Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s tennis team completed day one of the Eck Classic, held on the Notre Dame campus in Notre Dame, Ind. The tournament, which includes five singles flights and three doubles flights, will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Freshman Lindsay Williams (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) posted a win in her first collegiate match. She defeated DePaul’s Karen Falduto in round one of Flight C, 6-4, 6-3. Katherine Martin (So., Kennewick, Wash./Kennewick) recorded a win in the first round of Flight D over Amanda Devraj of Marquette (6-4, 6-3). In Flight E, Taryn Bowen (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) received a first-round bye before defeating Marquette’s Sommer LaValley in the quarterfinals (6-2, 6-0).
Sadhaf Pervez (So., Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) lost a three-set match to Shannon Duffy of Northwestern in the first round of Flight A (1-6, 6-1, 6-3). In Flight B singles, Laura Maloney (Sr., Barrington, Ill.) and Erica Fisk (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) each fell in the first round. Maloney lost to Melissa Woods of Purdue in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-3), while Fisk was defeated by Marquette’s Laura Garcia (6-2, 6-2). Claudia Castro (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas (Wis.) lost in Flight C to Wisconsin’s Katie Dougherty, 6-2, 7-5. Each player who lost in the first round moved into the consolation bracket.
In Flight A doubles, Fisk and Pervez lost to No. 14-ranked Kelly Cunha and Kimberly Guy of Notre Dame, 9-7, while Castro and Maloney were defeated by Genvieve Charron and Anabelle Espinosa of Marquette, 8-6. Fisk and Pervez won in the first round of consolation, defeating Cassie Haas and Pascale Veraberbeke of Iowa, 8-5. Castro and Maloney lost in the first round of consolation to Northwestern’s Simona Petrutiu and Marine Piriou, 8-5. Bowen and Williams fell in the first round of Flight B to Northwestern’s Duffy and Lia Jackson, 8-4. The duo was then defeated by Rachel Dybas and Falduto of DePaul in the first round of consolation, 8-3. In Flight C, OSU’s Martin teamed with Baas of Purdue to post a win in the quarterfinals over Amanda Devraj and LaValley of Marquette, 9-7.
