Softball Announces 2000 Team Awards – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Ohio State softball held its annual awards banquet honoring the 2000 season bidding farewell to seniors Renae Weigel (Coldwater, Ohio) and Toni Hileman (Alliance, Ohio). The Buckeyes ended the season with a 28-26 overall record and 4-13 Big Ten record.
Sophomore Stacy Roth (Wauseon, Ohio) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player by her teammates after leading the Buckeyes with a .386 batting average, 49 hits, six home runs and 36 runs batted. Roth also claimed Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The rookie class of 2000 were represented well, as three freshmen claimed honors. Kristine Himes (Bolivar, Ohio) captured the Rookie of the Year award after blasting an OSU single-season record 10 home runs. Jennifer Link (Yorba Linda, Ohio), with a fielding percentage of .959, was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year.
Katie Chain (North Canton, Ohio), who broke the freshman record for strikeouts with 125 and led the Buckeyes with 12 wins, was named the OSU Pitcher of the Year. Rogeanna Hottinger (Newark, Ohio), was named by SASSO counselor Roxanne Price as the Most Improved Scholar-Athlete.
Other major award winners included Chrissy Fowler (Utica, Ohio), who was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and captured the Buckeye Spirit award. Anna Smith (Walnut, Calif.) and Renae Weigel received the Coaches’ Award.
