Buckeyes Claim Titles at USTA Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio State men’s and women’s tennis players swept the singles, doubles and mixed doubles championships at the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) National Amateur Hardcourt Championships, a USTA Gold Ball Event, today at the Stickney Tennis Center. Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West) led the way with three titles, while Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) claimed two championships.%^$
%^$In singles, Rincon won her first championship of the day by defeating Illinois’ Jenny McGaffigan, 6-4, 6-3, in the women’s final match. Phil Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) defeated OSU teammate Porter, 6-1, 6-2, to win the tournament title for the second-consecutive year.%^$
%^$In an all-OSU men’s doubles final, Porter and Derek DeFalco (Sr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) beat Metz and B.J. Munroe (Sr., Freeport, Bahamas) for the crown, 8-5. Rincon and OSU teammate Claudia Castro (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas (Wis.) won the women’s title with an 8-4 victory over McGaffigan and Brown’s Priscilla Zeff.%^$
%^$Porter and Rincon ended the day with a victory in the mixed doubles final over Michael LaHaie of Memphis and Michelle Webb of Illinois, 8-4. Buckeyes Matt Wooster (Jr., Huron, Ohio) and Taryn Bowen (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) won the third place match over Clemson’s Colin Atkinson and Alexis Prousis, a high school player from Lake Forest, Ill., 8-5.%^$
%^$The tournament also is a part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Collegiate Summer Circuit. The Summer Circuit is made up of five regional circuits that each consist of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July. Points are awarded based on a players’ finish and the winners of each circuit (men’s and women’s singles and doubles) plus the next top three performers, including a wild card, will automatically qualify for the season-ending ITA National Summer Championships held in Williamsburg, Va., Aug. 9-13. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles winners will be given a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament and the ITA National Clay Court Championships.
