Ohio State Tennis Players Compete in USTA Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Members of the Ohio State men’s and women’s tennis teams are competing in the United States Tennis Association National Amateur Hardcourt Championships, a USTA Gold Ball Event, today through Friday at the Stickey Tennis Center.
Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West), the top-seed in the women’s singles draw, advanced to the semifinals with a victory over Columbia University’s Laila Shetty (6-3, 6-1). Her semifinal match will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. while the final match will be Friday at 9 a.m.
On the men’s side, the Buckeyes had a number of players advance to the round of 16. Top-seeded Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) will compete tomorrow at 8 a.m. against OSU teammate Jonathon Scale (Actworth, Ga./Harrison).
OSU will be represented in both men’s and women’s doubles tomorrow. The matches are scheduled to begin around noon.
The tournament also is a part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Collegiate Summer Circuit. The Summer Circuit is made up of five regional circuits that each consist of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July. Points are awarded based on a players’ finish and the winners of each circuit (men’s and women’s singles and doubles) plus the next top three performers, including a wild card, will automatically qualify for the season-ending ITA National Summer Championships held in Williamsburg, Va., Aug. 9-13. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles winners will be given a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament and the ITA National Clay Court Championships.
