COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team fell to Penn State today, 2-1, in eight innings at the Nittany Lion Softball Field. Ohio State falls to 28-25 overall and 4-12 in the Big Ten, while Penn State improves to 33-15 overall and 11-5 in conference play. Ohio State, who was fighting for the seventh spot in the conference standings, has been eliminated from next weekend’s Big Ten Tournament as only the top six teams will compete.
Ohio State scored first on the Nittany Lions as Sarah West blasted her sixth home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning. Penn State rallied back in the bottom of the sixth to tie, 1-1, when Tanis Ambelang singled to rightfield scoring Jennifer Tripken.
Both teams could not score in the seventh to advance the game into extra innings. After holding the Buckeyes hitless in the top of the inning, Penn State’s Gina Bianchini opened the eighth inning with a double to centerfield. She would advance to second as Tripken was walked. A batter later, Ambelang was intentionally walked and Penn State would score the game-winning run on a wild pitch by reliever Katie Chain.
Toni Hileman collected the loss, after pitching 6.2 innings, giving up two runs off six hits, walking three and striking out one. Ambelang posted her 10th win of the season after completing the game, giving up four hits and striking out six.
The Buckeyes will finish out the 2000 season against Penn State on Sunday at noon.
