Softball Sweeps Oakland, 6-1 and 5-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – %^$The Ohio State softball team defeated Oakland today in a doubleheader, 6-1 and 5-0, at Buckeye Field to break a four-game losing streak. Freshman Kristine Himes led the Buckeye contingent, going 5-for-7, with five hits and two runs batted in on the day. She also nailed a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to post an OSU record of ninth home runs this season.%^$
%^$ Game One %^$
%^$Ohio State scored first as Anna Smith and Jennifer Link both reached base on back-to-back singles. With Smith on third and Link on second, they would double steal, scoring Smith. Kristine Himes and Renae Weigel added two more runs off a single and a double to centerfield. Sarah West notched a sacrifice fly to score Weigel and give the Buckeyes a 4-0 lead.%^$
%^$The Grizzlies came back in the bottom of the fourth off a Bozenna Johnson’s RBI-single to rightfield. But Ohio State extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth when Himes blasted her ninth home run of the season to left field.%^$
%^$Katie Chain (11-9) completed the game, giving up only five hits, walking two and striking out five. She extendsled off with a single to the shortstop and advanced to second on a steal. Oakland’s Linnea Utecht collected the loss after giving up four runs and walking one in 0.2 innings pitched.%^$
%^$Game Two %^$
%^$Ohio State shut out the Grizzlies, holding them to two hits and notching 12 hits for the doubleheader sweep. Smith opened the bottom of the first with a single and advance to second on a steal. She would score off Link’s single and a throwing error from Oakland. After Weigel reached first on a walk, West followed with an RBI-single to centerfield and Holly English added another run off a fielder’s choice.%^$
%^$Ohio State captured the 5-0 win off Link and Himes’ back-to-back RBI-doubles in the bottom of the fourth.%^$
%^$Inside the circle, Kristi Martin pitched six innings, giving up only one hit and striking out nine for her seventh win of the season. Tiffany Evans fell to 1-5 on the season, after going 1.2 innings, giving up three runs and walking one.%^$
%^$Ohio State will end its home season on Wednesday, as the Buckeyes take on Robert Morris in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
