COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State softball players Jennifer Link (Fr., Yorba Linda, Calif. ), Stacy Roth (So., Wauseon, Ohio) and Anna Smith (So., Walnut, Calif.) were selected to the 2000 all-Big Ten second team. It is the most conference selections under four-year head coach Linda Kalafatis.
“We are very happy. This is a great honor for not only Anna, Stacy and Jenn, but also for their teammates,” Kalafatis said. “By having a freshman and two sophomores honored, it really shows the youth in our program, but also the great progress we are making.”
Smith led the Buckeyes with a single-season record of 37 steals this year. She ranked second on the team with a .335 batting average and led the team with 44 runs scored and 55 hits.
Roth, who missed the last seven conference games because of a flu-like illness that has not yet been diagnosed, still led the team with a .386 batting average and 36 runs batted in. She is third in the conference in batting and RBI.
Link, who started all 54 games at second base, had an impressive debut, leading her freshman class with a .294 BA, 31 runs scored, 48 hits and nine stolen bases. She also placed second in runs (31), third in thefts (9) and fourth in hits (48) on the OSU freshmen record lists.
The Ohio State softball team wrapped up the 2000 season last week after falling to Penn State, 2-1 and 4-0 in two games. They finished the year with a 28-26 overall record and tied for ninth place with a 4-13 Big Ten mark.
