Men’s Golf Heads to NCAA Central Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio-Ohio State placed fourth with a score of 1,201 at the Big Ten Championships at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. April5-7.
Northwestern won the 72-hole tournament with a score of 1,160, finishing 33 shots ahead of host Purdue.
Northwestern’s Luke Donald was the medalist, shooting one-under at 287 to edge out his teammate, Jess Daley, who shot an even 288.
The Buckeyes were led by Mike Austin (Jr., Burton, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic), who tied for seventh place with a score of 295 and David Wagenseller (So., Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington), who finished 11th at 297.
Buckeyes Qualify for Regional
Ohio State is one of six District 4 schools to qualify for the NCAA Central Regional, hosted by Southwest Texas State at the par-72, 6,870 yard Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas May 18-20. OSU will be joined by Big Ten schools Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan and instate MAC schools Kent State and Toledo in Victoria. A total of 421 participants will compete at the regional with the 156 top finishers advancing to the championship final May 31-June 3 at the Grand national Golf Complex in Opelika, Ala., hosted by Auburn.
Austin, Wagenseller All-Big Ten
Wagenseller and Austin became the 78th and 79th Buckeyes to be named all-Big Ten during Coach Jim Brown’s 27 year tenure. Wagenseller’s stroke average of 73.2 over 36 rounds leads the Buckeyes. He was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after he captured first place at the FirstEnergy Invitational in Akron, Ohio (April 22-23) with a score of 214, including a tournament-low round of 67 in the first round of the invite, to become the first OSU medalist since Ryan Armour won the Big Ten tournament in 1998. Wagenseller’s FirstEnergy win capped off three consecutive weekends that saw Wagenseller card his best career finish. His career-low round of 67 came in the first round of the Red River Classic (Oct. 11-12). He was top OSU finisher in seven of 11 tournaments.
Austin’s stroke average of 74.4 over 30 rounds is second on the team. His top finish of the season came at FirstEnergy Invitational, where he placed third with a score of 216. He also fired in his career-low round of 70 in the first round of the FirstEnergy. Austin was top OSU finisher at the Big Ten Championships, placing seventh with a score of 297.
Last Time at Regionals
The Buckeyes last competed in a regional field during the 1997-98 season, qualifying for the Central Regional in San Antonio, Texas. Led by Ryan Armour’s 19th place tie, OSU placed seventh in the field of 21 to qualify for the NCAA championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Ohio State placed sixth out of 30 schools at the Championships at the University of New Mexico Championship Course. Armour and Craig Matthew tied for 15th place with a four-round total of 281 to pace the Buckeyes.
