Softball Nipped by Florida Atlantic, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team fell to Florida Atlantic today, 2-1, in the first game of the Golden Panther Invitational in Miami, Fla. The Owls scored at the top of the eighth inning in a tiebreaker to clinch the 2-1 win and improve to 16-7 overall. The Buckeyes drop to 5-5 for the season.
The Buckeyes scored their only run in the bottom of the third when Sarah West opened the inning with a triple to right field. Two batters later, Holly English slapped a single to third base to score West.
The Owls tied the Buckeyes in the top of sixth when Heather Wright scored off an OSU error. Florida Atlantic would then take the win in the top of the eighth on a tiebreaker run. With Kristin Gonzalez placed on second, Tabitha Price popped a sacrifice fly to advance her to third. Gonzalez then scored off Wright’s single to left field.
The Buckeyes did not score in the bottom of the eighth to fall to .500 for the season.
Inside the circle, Kristi Martin was steller, holding the Owls to only two hits and striking out a season-high 10 batters to complete the game. She falls to 2-3 for the season. Florida Atlantic’s Kristie Picon notched her seventh win of the season and remains undefeated, after striking out three and giving up only three hits.
The Buckeyes will next compete against Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. today in the second game of the Golden Panther Invitational.
