OSU Softball Falls Just Short of Upsetting No. 11 Southern Mississippi – Ohio State Buckeyes

After opening the first inning with a 2-0 lead the Buckeyes looked to capture the upset, but would eventually fall to No. 11-ranked Southern Mississippi, 3-2, today at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Golden Eagles rallied in the bottom of the sixth, posting two runs to capture their 14th-consecutive win this season.
Ohio State went up 2-0 when both Anna Smith and Jennifer Link were walked by Southern Mississippi’s Felicia Gonzales in the beginning of the first. Stacy Roth followed with a grounder to the third baseman to score Smith. Link would then score on a missed catch by Kenya Peters at home plate.
Kristi Martin held the Golden Eagles to only one hit and striking out four until the bottom of the fifth when Amy Berman belted a solo home run to come within one run.
Late in the bottom of the sixth, Southern Mississippi’s Jennifer Collins batted in the game-winning run off a two-run double to advance to the finals of the Winthrop Invitational.
Southern Mississippi’s Courtney Blades, who relieved Gonzales in the first inning, struck out 15 Buckeyes to capture her 22nd win of the season.
The Buckeyes fall to 13-9 for the season and will travel to Southern California this week to compete against DePaul (March 21), Long Beach State (March 22) and Cal-State Fullerton (March 23), before beginning a six-game homestand next week.
