Ohio State Softball Blanks Tennessee State, 13-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman Katie Chain recorded her first collegiate no-hitter and struck out a season-high 10 batters today to shut out Tennessee State, 13-0, in the first game of the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. As a team, Ohio State posted a season-high 12 hits against the Lady Tigers to improve to 8-8 for the season.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes in the bottom of the first, took a 6-0 lead with three runs coming off two Lady Tiger errors. Anna Smith led off with a walk and then stole her 11th base of the season to advance to second. Holly English followed with a single to the pitcher. Both would advance to second and third on a pass ball. Jennifer Link reached first on an error from the TSU first baseman to send Smith and English home. Two batters later, Rogeanna Hottinger reached first on a throwing error from Lady Tiger’s third baseman Deanna Miller, scoring Link. Sarah West followed with a RBI single to score Hottinger. Kristine Himes then belted her second home run of the season over the centerfielder wall to add two more runs to the OSU lead.%^$
%^$Ohio State tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second. English, Link and Roth led off the inning with singles. With the bases loaded, Renae Weigel notched a two-RBI single into rightfield. Hottinger singled to centerfield to drive Roth home. Two batters later, Chrissy Fowler walked sending Weigel home for a 10-0 lead.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes carried the lead into the fourth when Kristine Himes drove in three more runs off a double to centerfield. Himes led the Buckeyes, going 2-for-2 and five RBI against Tennessee State.%^$
%^$The Lady Tigers were hitless against Chain who completed the game, walked one and struck out 10. She now carries a 4-2 record. It also marks the second no-hitter by a Buckeye this season as Kristi Martin recorded a no-hitter against Nicholls State, Feb. 12.%^$
%^$Looking for the top seed of the tournament, the Buckeyes will take on North Carolina-Wilmington (8-14) at 8 p.m. tonight in the second game of the Winthrop Invitational.
