COLUMBUS, Ohio-
Today was the final day of competition for the men’s and women’s Indoor Big Ten Championships. Ohio State’s men finished their indoor season in fourth place and the women in sixth. Both teams advanced from yeasterday’s finishes of seventh and eighth.
Four Buckeyes emerged from the meet as Big Ten Individual Champions. Donica Merriman earned the fastest time in both the 200 (23.93) and for her second consecutive year, the 60-meter hurdles (8.19). Dominque Calloway placed second behind Merriman in the 60 hurdles (8.24) and she won the 400 (54.89). For the second consecutive year, Andrew Pierce placed first in the 400-meter dash with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 46.46. He also placed second in the 200 (21.51). Ian Connor was the 3,000-meter run champion with a time of 8:12.95 and he placed second in the mile with a time of 4:11.22.
At their first Big Ten Championships, the freshman class contributed much strength to the Buckeyes. Rob Myers placed second in the 800 (1:50.76) and Joel Brown placed fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.15). Nicholette Chambers gave an outstanding performance in the pentathlon, earning second place. Her efforts were crucial especially since last year’s pentathlon champion, teammate Desiree Jones, could not compete because of an injury. Tami Smith placed second in the high jump clearing a height of 5’7?. Mandy Osmond contributed to the Buckeye’s score with an eighth place finish in the 800.
The men succeeded in their season goal of a Top 5 finish. The team has shown much improvement compared to last year’s eighth-place finish. At the beginning of the season, the women’s team had high hopes of a Top 3 finish, unfortunately several key athletes were lost to injuries and ineligibility.
Next weekend, several Buckeyes will compete in the USATF Championships on March 4.
