COLUMBUS, Ohio— Ohio State Diving Head Coach Vince Panzano was named the Most Outstanding Coach at last weekend’s Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Buckeyes dominated the diving portion of the championships, winning both the one and three-meter dives.
Carrie Ziebarth (Sr., Auburn, Wash.) captured first place in the one-meter dive and Holly Underwood (So., Conroe, Tex.) won the three-meter dive. Five of OSU’s six divers placed in the competition. Melanie Johnson (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) placed third in the one-meter and seventh in the three-meter dive. Jillian Cicione (Fr., Plantation, Fla.) placed eight in the three-meter event.
“We had a great week, the team did extremely well,” Panzano said. “That’s the best performance we’ve had in a few years.
“What made this past weekend special is that we had two separate wins. Usually when you win two events, its the same diver who wins both. To have two different divers win was especially meaningful.”
Panzano, in his 22nd season at OSU, has coached at least one national champion in 18 of the last 22 years and has had divers on the last four Olympic teams. He was selected as NCAA Diving Coach of the Year in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and won the “Mike Peppe Award” as U.S. Diving’s outstanding coach in 1988 and 1989.
