COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team lost to Cal State Northridge, 3-2, in the SDSU Campbell/Cartier Softball Classic in Poway, Calif. today. The Buckeyes are now 3-4 overall, while the Matadors improve to 3-3-1 for the season.
After the Matadors posted two runs in the top of the inning, the Buckeyes came back in the bottom of the first when Anna Smith reached first base on an error by Northridges’ pitcher Summer Richardson. Two batters later, Stacey Roth blasted a double into leftfield to send Smith home.
The Buckeyes followed again with Rogeanna Hottinger and Kristine Himes each hitting singles in the bottom of the second. On a fielder’s choice, Hottinger would be out at home. However, Himes scored a batter later when Chrissy Fowler was caught stealing second base.
Kristi Martin, after a shaky first inning, came back to not give up any hits until the top of the sixth. The Matadors scored the winning run as Jodi Borenstein flied out to score Chastity Johnson.
Martin, who completed the game, took the loss and falls to 1-2 for the season.
The Buckeyes will now take on Pacific tomorrow at 1 p.m. and Sacramento State at 6 p.m. at the Sportsplex USA complex in Poway, Calif. They will finish the tournament on Sunday going up against No. 3 Fresno State at 9:30 a.m. and Long Beach State at noon.
