Three Buckeyes Advance to Round of 16 in Singles at ITA Midwest Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio — Three Ohio State women’s tennis players won two matches to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, today in Ann Arbor, Mich. In addition, two OSU doubles team reached the round of 16 in the main draw.
With her two victories, senior Kristy Dascoli (Sr., Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Academy) tied the program record for all-time singles wins with a record of 81-37 in her career. She currently shares the record with Maria Olazagatsti, who compiled a career mark of 81-20 from 1977-79.
Dascoli, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated Illinois State’s Liina Suurvarki in two sets in the opening round before posting a win over Lindsey Green of Notre Dame in the round of 32. She will face Shannon Duffy of Northwestern, a 9-16 seed, in the next round.
Monica Rincon (Jr., Lapeer, Mich./West), the No. 4 seed, also won two matches. She defeated Chicago State’s Joanna Phang in the first round. In the round of 16 she beat Michigan’s Szandra Fuzesi easily, 6-1, 6-0. She will go up against Nina Vaughan of Notre Dame, a 9-16 seed, in the round of 16.
Freshman Erica Fisk (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who won three matches in qualifying to reach the main draw, continued her winning ways. She beat Dayton’s Rebecca Stanchin in the opening round and Kim Guy of Notre Dame in the round of 32. She is scheduled to face Cassie Haas of Iowa, a 9-16 seed, in the next round.
OSU’s Sadhaf Pervez posted a first-round win over Gena Tranquada of Ball State before falling to Haas in the next round.
In doubles, the tandems of Dascoli and Rincon and Pervez and Lindsay Williams (Fr., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Grove) each advanced to the round of 16. No. 8-ranked Dascoli and Rincon, the No. 2 seed, had a bye in the first round before beating Devon Bissinger and Abby Bratton of Bowling Green, 8-3. They will go up against Szilvia Kelemen and Laura Taylor of DePaul in the round of 16. Pervez and Williams defeated Valparaiso’s Kate Kollarova and Mara Sonkin in the first round. They then beat Eldina Fazlic and Michelle Webb of Illinois in a close match, 9-8 (4). The OSU tandem will face Katie Cunha and Kim Guy of Notre Dame, the No. 3 seed, in the next round.
The tournament continues Sunday, Nov. 5 with the rounds of 16 and the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles. The semifinal rounds will be held Monday, Nov. 6, with the finals the following day.
