Women’s Volleyball Faces Ball State In NCAA First Round Match – Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State (24-6 overall) received an at-large bid for the 64-team NCAA Tournament and was selected to host a pair of first round matches and a second round match. The Buckeyes will play Ball State (25-6) Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. or 30 minutes after the completion of the Notre Dame (25-6) and Cincinnati (24-9) match that will start at 5 p.m. The winners of the Friday matches will advance to the second round Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. That winner advances to the Central Regional at a site to be named later.
Last week, Ohio State won a pair of home matches to close out the regular season. The Buckeyes defeated Iowa 3-0 (15-5, 15-5, 16-14) and upset No. 7 Minnesota 3-2 (12-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-13, 18-16).
OSU RANKS 16TH IN POLLS
Ohio State was 16th in the USA TODAY/AVCA Top 25 Poll moving up from 17th. The Buckeyes moved up one spot to No. 16 in the Volleyball Magazine Poll after being No. 17 last week.
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Offensively, Ohio State is showing great balance with five players averaging 3.23 or more kills per game. Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) (351) averages 3.44 kills per game with Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) (359 kills) second at 3.39 kills per game. Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) averages 3.27 (347) for third, Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) is at 3.26 (339) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) 3.23 (339). Stearns is the squad’s top percentage hitter at .393 with Calligaris second at .341. Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) is averaging 14.20 assists per game (1,349). Heather Whalen (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) has seen action in 14 matches (31 games) and has three starts at setter. She has a 5.65 assist per game average (175 assists). Botica is the team leader in ace serves with 39 (.38) with Draeger second with 34 (.32). Defensively, Botica leads the team in digs with a 3.23 average (329 digs), one of six players with averages of 1.82 or more digs per game. Stearns is second at 2.71 (282) and Calligaris third with 2.53 (268) tied with Virtue (240). Draeger averages 2.47 (259) and Nikki Cisco (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) 1.82 (193). At the net, Stiling leads the team in blocking with a 1.16 per game average on 123 blocks (13 solo, 110 assists) and Stearns is second at 1.05 (109 blocks, 10-99). As a team, Ohio State is hitting .260 and averages 17.77 kills per game. The Buckeyes are averaging 2.50 blocks, 16.30 digs and 1.66 aces per game. VIRTUE NAMED ALL-BIG TEN
Katie Virtue was one of 13 players named to the All-Big Ten team as selected by the league coaches. Named as honorable mention selections were Sue Calligaris and Suzie Stiling.
VIRTUE BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Big Ten Conference named Katie Virtue as the conference Player of the Week for her play against Iowa and No. 7 Minnesota. She had 54 assists and 10 digs in the win over Iowa and 72 assists, 11 digs and seven assist blocks in the upset over Minnesota. She had missed the three previous matches because of a stress fracture in her left foot.
VIRTUE NOW 5TH IN CAREER ASSISTS
With her 54 assists against Iowa, Katie Virtue moved past Marlene O’Brien (1983-86, 2,621 assists) into fifth place on the OSU career assist list. Virtue added 72 assists against Minnesota and has 2,719 career assists.
STILING ADVANCES IN BLOCKS
With a total of 12 assists blocks (five against Iowa and seven against Minnesota), Suzie Stiling has moved up in the career ranks in both assist and total blocks. Her 189 career assist blocks has moved her to 14th on the OSU career list passing Laura Davis (1991-94) with 187. In total blocks, Stiling now ranks 14th with 217 (28 solo, 189 assists) moving past three other players. She passed, with 206 each, Lisa Vitali (1986-89) and Laura Davis (1991-94) and Jenny Collins (1982-85) with 214.
VIRTUE HAS BLOCKING DAY
Against Minnesota, Katie Virtue had a career-high of seven assist blocks. Her previous high for assists and total blocks was six against Penn State in 1999.
CALLIGARIS DIGS TO A CAREER HIGH
With 20 digs against Minnesota, Sue Calligaris set a career-high against the Gophers. Her previous high was 15, twice. She also equaled her career-high of 21 kills in the Minnesota match. Calligaris had 21 kills against Michigan State earlier this season.
DRAEGER EQUALS DIGS CAREER HIGH
With her sixth double-figure dig match in the last seven matches, Shelly Draeger equalled her career high of 20 digs against Minnesota. She previously had 20 digs at Michigan.
STEARNS TIES FOR 14TH IN ACES
Dana Stearns scored an ace serve against Minnesota and now has 102 for her career. That moved her into a tie for 14th on the OSU career list tying Jen Flynn (1996-99). Stearns needs four to pass No. 13 Rosie Snow (1996-99) with 105 and that would move her into a tie for 12th with Lisa Vitali (1986-89) who has 106.

In the final statistics for conference matches, Dana Stearns captured the hitting percentage crown by .001. Stearns hit .373 for the conference season. Finishing second was Betsy Spicer of Illinois at .372. Also ranked in hitting for OSU were Sue Calligaris, 7th, .321 and Suzie Stiling, 10th, .304. Katie Virtue finished third in assists at 14.45 per game while Shelly Draeger was fourth in service aces at .36. Stiling ranked seventh in blocks at 1.37 and Anne Botica was fourth in digs at 3.53.

In the NCAA national statistics released Nov. 19, Katie Virtue was ranked 11th in assists at 14.21 and Dana Stearns is 10th in hitting percentage at .393. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are 10th in kills per game at 17.77 and eighth in assists at 15.95.
BUCKEYES 10-4 IN TELEVISED MATCHES
Ohio State has had 14 matches televised on a state, regional or national level this season and has won nine of those. The Buckeyes are 6-1 on the Ohio News Network (ONN) which covers the state of Ohio. OSU split road matches on Midwest Sports Channel (MSC), a regional cable network, defeated Iowa, lost to Penn State and upset Minnesota in matches carried by Fox Sports and won its national cable appearance on ESPN2. The Cardinals are 25-6 overall and were 16-2 in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference, finishing second. Ball State advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship match before losing 3-1 to Western Michigan.

LAST TIME VS. NOTRE DAME
In a first round NCAA match played at UCLA, Ohio State advanced to the second round with a 13-15, 15-10, 16-14, 15-7 win over Notre Dame. Behind a 26-kill, 15-dig performance by Rosie Snow, the Buckeyes overcame a 1-0 Notre Dame lead to take the next three games. Jen Flynn added 19 kills, Shelly Draeger 16 and Dana Stearns 10. Game one was tied at 13 before the Irish won. Game three saw Notre Dame stop four game points before OSU took a 16-14 win. The Irish received a team-high 24 kills from Kristy Kreher and 20 from Christi Girton as they outhit Ohio State .321 to .296. Notre Dame also outblocked Ohio State 16 to 10. The Buckeyes had the edge in digs, 46 to 35 and in aces, 12 to one. The win advanced Ohio State to the second round of the NCAA Championship to face UCLA.
LOOKING AT CINCINNATI
The Bearcats are 24-9 and finished first at 14-2 in the Conference USA American Division. Cincinnati lost in the conference tournament semifinals.

HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone is in his 19th year at Ohio State. He has a 422-187 (.693) record with the Buckeyes and is 242-105 (.697) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 11 years have only finished below third twice. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 11 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Was an assistant coach for the Fair Valley Country Club’s swim team during the summer. The team placed second overall in the Greater Dayton Swimming Association Championships. Her aunt Janis Browning (Janis Reichert) played volleyball for Ohio State, lettering in 1975-76.

Started three matches (Michigan State, Indiana and Penn State) when Katie Virtue was held out due to her foot injury. Career-highs of 54 assists and 14 digs in victory at Indiana. Saw her first action as backrow specialist at Marshall. Came in at setter for the injured Katie Virtue in the third game at Marshall collecting 17 assists. Went white-water rafting in California during the summer.
