Women’s Volleyball Downs Iowa in Three Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (23-6 overall, 13-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (15-5, 15-5, 16-14) victory over Iowa (13-15, 9-11) Friday in St. John Arena. OSU’s Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) had a match-high 21 kills for the Buckeyes with Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) adding 13, Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) 12 and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) 11. Iowa’s Fabiana de Abreu had a team-high 13 kills for the Hawkeyes with Katie Panhorst adding 12 and Sara Meyermann 11.
Buckeye Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) returned to the starting lineup collecting 54 assist, 10 digs, three assist blocks and a kill. Virtue had been held out the last three matches to rest a stress fracture in her left foot. Prior to missing the three matches, she had played with the fracture for seven matches but had not practiced. Virtue’s 54 assists moved her to No. 5 on the OSU career records list with 2,647. She passed Marlene O’Brien (1983-86) with 2,621.
Ohio State opened game one with a 5-0 lead. OSU served game point at 14-3 but a Panhorst kill sided out. A Meyermann kill for point put the lead at 14-4. OSU sided out with a Botica kill but on its second game point, a Renee Hill kill sided out. Iowa’s Carolyn Giese cut the margin to 14-5 with a kill. A Hawkeye error returned the serve to OSU for its third game point. A Meyermann kill stopped OSU’s game point attempt. Stiling’s kill set up the Buckeyes’ fourth game point but a Giese kill sided the serve to Iowa. Another Stiling kill gave OSU its fifth game point on which a Botica kill ended the game at 15-5. Ohio State hit .310 for the game to .037 for Iowa.
From a 1-1 tied in game two, Ohio State scored the next seven points to take an 8-1 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 14-3 where kills by de Abreu and Panhorst and an OSU error stopped Ohio State game points. An OSU error and a kill by Panhorst were good for points cutting the lead to 14-5. Stiling’s kill sided out for the Buckeyes and a block by Botica and Stiling ended the game at 15-5. For the game Ohio State hit .385 to Iowa’s .220.
Iowa started game three with a 2-0 lead expanding it to 6-1. Ohio State responded with five consecutive points on three kills by Draeger and two by Calligaris to tie the game at six. OSU took an 8-6 lead on a Stiling kill and an Iowa error. A Buckeye error made it 8-7. Kills by Stearns and Draeger and three Iowa errors made it 13-7 Ohio State. A kill by Iowa’s Panhorst made it 13-8. OSU’s Botica set match point at 14-8 with a kill. Two kills by de Abreu stopped two match points and an OSU error cut the lead to 14-9. An OSU error and a Panhorst kill stopped match points three and four for the Buckeyes. A Meyermann kill made it 14-10. Another Meyermann kill stopped OSU’s fifth match point. A solo block by Meyermann and an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to 14-12. Two OSU errors and a Jamie Lansing kill stopped match points six, seven and eight. An OSU error cut the lead to 14-13. OSU’s ninth match point was stopped by a kill from de Abreu and a Buckeye error tied the game at 14. Back-to-back kills by Stiling closed the game at 16-14 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .297 for the game to .250 for Iowa.
For the match Ohio State hit .326 to Iowa’s .197. The Buckeyes had a 65-50 advantage in kills, a 53-40 margin in digs and an eight to six edge in blocks. OSU outserved Iowa three to one.
Ohio State completes the regular season Saturday as they face No. 7 Minnesota (28-2, 17-2) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. Minnesota is currently tied with Wisconsin (27-3, 17-2) for first place in the Big Ten. The Badgers defeated Michigan 3-0 (15-7, 15-11, 15-8) tonight and will play at Michigan State (17-11, 10-9) Saturday.
