Women’s Tennis Completes First Day of Midwest Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio — Erica Fisk (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) posted two wins in qualifying to lead the Ohio State women’s tennis team at the 2000 ITA Midwest Championships, today in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Fisk recorded a win over Michigan’s Jen Duprez, the No. 1 seed in the 64-player qualifying draw, in the first round of play. The match was tied at one set each when Duprez retired after losing the first two games of the third set (5-7, 6-4, 2-0). In the second round, Fisk came back to beat Western Michigan’s Melanie Remynse in three sets, 0-6, 6-0, 6-3. Fisk will advance to the main draw of the tournament with a win over Anna Pavlovic of Marquette in the third round.
Claudia Castro (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas (Wis.) won her first-round match over Western Michigan’s Valeria Stoilova (6-1, 6-2) before falling to Martha Grimm of Indiana in the second round, 6-2, 6-3.
Three Buckeyes fell in the first round of qualifying. Laura Maloney (Sr., Barrington, Ill./Colorado State), a 9-16 seed, lost to Northwestern’s Stacy Kokx in two sets. Taryn Bowen (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was defeated by Pavlovic and Lindsay Williams (Fr., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Grove) lost to Northwestern’s Simona Petrutiu, a 9-16 seed, in two sets. All three Buckeyes will compete in the consolation draw.
After receiving a first-round bye, the doubles team of Bowen and Castro will compete in the second round against WMU’s Remynse and Stoilova at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3. Singles competition will follow doubles.
