COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (22-6 overall, 12-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team lost to No. 9 Penn State (25-5, 14-4) in a three-game sweep (15-12, 15-4, 15-10). PSU’s Miska Levy had a match-high 22 kills for Penn State with Katie Schumacher, Amanda Rome and Robyn Guokas, each adding eight. Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico) had a team-high 13 kills for Ohio State with Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph) and Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) adding 11 each.
Penn State held a 14-5 lead in game one before Ohio State scored the next seven points. A Penn State errors and a block by Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) cut the lead to 14-7. Back-to-back kills by Heather Whalen (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) and Botica made it 14-9. A kill by Stearns and two blocks by Stearns and Whalen cut the PSU lead to 14-12. Levy sided out for Penn State and a block by Guokas ended the game 15-12 on the Nittany Lions’ third game point. Pen State hit .228 for the game to .203 for Ohio State
Penn State had seven blocks for points in game two as the Nittany Lions built a large lead and coasted to a 15-4 win. PSU hit .378 with only one error to OSU’s .068.
The Nittany Lions opened a 5-0 lead in game three, expanding it to 14-7 and serving for the match. Two match points were stopped by Calligaris kills. A Stiling kill cut the lead to 14-8. Penn State failed to score on its third and fourth match points, while two kills by Botica cut the lead to 14-10. The Nittany Lions’ fifth match point was good for the 15-10 victory on a block by Robyn Guokas and Shannon Bortner for the match. Penn State hit .229 for the game to .143 for Ohio State. Penn State outhit Ohio State .268 to .148 for the match. The Nittany Lions had the advantage in blocks, 18-7, digs, 65-62 and aces, 4-0. The Buckeyes had a 58-53 margin in kills.
OSU setter Heather Whalen (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment), playing for the injured Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) had a career-high seven kills on 11 attempts for a career-high .636 and added 38 assists, six digs and three assist blocks. Virtue is out with a stress fracture to her left foot.
Ohio State concludes regular season play with two home matches next weekend. OSU hosts Iowa Friday, Nov. 24 and Minnesota Saturday, Nov. 25.
