COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Ohio State men’s soccer team shocked the Penn State Nittany Lions, 3-2, in overtime to win its first Big Ten Championship in front of a home crowd of 806 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sunday. Forward Justin Cook (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla./Oviedo) scored his second goal of the tournament to tie the match. Midfielder Jake Traeger (So., Littleton, Colo./Heritage) scored the game-winning goal for the Buckeyes. OSU improves to 12-4-4 overall on the season.
Penn State led at the end of the first half, 1-0. Ben Dawson took a shot, only to have it blocked by an OSU defender. Dawson got the rebound and ripped the ball past Buckeye goalkeeper Kerry Thompson (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) from about 22 yards out in the 21st minute.
The Buckeyes came out strong to start the second half. In the 47th minute of play, Cook scored Ohio State’s first goal of the match off a free kick. Cook has recorded 10 goals this season, tying him with OSU’s Juan Acevedo for fifth place on the record list for goals in an individual season.
Twenty minutes later, Cook fed the ball to midfielder Andy Kreinbrink (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) who punched it past PSU keeper Ryan Sickman from 18 yards out. Penn State’s Brett Forbrich fired the ball past Thompson off a cross from teammate Derek Potteiger to end regulation with a score of 2-2.
With 50 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, midfielder Andy Krienbrink (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) served the ball to Traeger, who drilled it to the lower right corner to end the game.
“I’m just happy for the guys,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “What a great job they did today, battling from behind to take the lead and then to give it up and come back again. What a great effort by the whole team.”
By winning the Big Ten men’s soccer championship, Ohio State receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2000 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship Bracket will be announced during a selection show airing Monday, Nov. 13, from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET. First round play begins this weekend, Nov. 17-19.
