COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 13th-ranked Ohio State (19-2 overall, 9-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team defeated Illinois (11-12, 2-10) 15-9, 15-6, 15-12 Friday in Huff Hall. OSU’s Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) scored match-highs of 13 kills and seven blocks (one solo, six assists) while Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) added ten kills and hit .625. Betsy Spicer and Anne Koester had a team-high seven kills each for Illinois.%^$
%^$From a 1-1 tie in game one, Illinois built up a 4-1 lead. Ohio State came back to tie the game at four and then take a 6-4 lead off kills by Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis) and Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph). An OSU error made it 6-5 but an Illinois error an ace by Botica put OSU ahead 8-5. A block by Spicer and Betsy Eiserman cut the lead to 8-6. OSU made it 9-6 on an ace by Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), while a block by Lydia Gard and Koester cut the margin to 9-7. A kill by Virtue made it 10-7. OSU advanced the score to 14-9 off an Illinois error. A block by Eiserman and Gard sided out to Illinois on game point. A Botica kill set OSU’s second game point and a Illini error ended the game at 15-9. The Buckeyes hit .300 for the game to .118 for the Illini.%^$
%^$With game two tied at one, a kill by Kate Hill gave Illinois a 2-1 lead. Two kills by Stearns put OSU ahead 3-2. OSU completed a five-point run with a block by Stearns and Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico), an ace by Virtue and a kill by Botica to go up 6-2. A Calligaris kill and an Illinois error made it 8-2. An OSU error and a block by Koester and Gard cut the lead to 8-4. OSU score four consecutive points with kills by Draeger and Calligaris, a block by Stiling and an Illinois error to take a 12-4 lead. A Draeger-Stiling block put OSU ahead 13-4. Kills by Spicer and Shadia Haddad closed the margin to 13-6. An Illinois error set game point and a Calligaris kill ended the game at 15-6. OSU hit .448 for the game to .063 for Illinois.%^$
%^$With game three tied at one, Illinois ran five consecutive points with two kill by Koester, an ace by Haddad and two OSU errors. Two ace serves by Amber Lindner and a block by Spicer and Koester gave Illinois a 9-1 lead. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 9-5 off two Illinois errors and kills by Stearns and Erin Treadway (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne). An Illinois ace by Sarah Pomeroy put the lead at 10-5. OSU responded with a five-point run with two aces from Stearns, two kills by Calligaris and a block by Calligaris and Stiling to tie the game at 10. Illinois went up 11-10 on an OSU error. OSU tied the game at 11 on a Draeger and Stiling block. OSU took a 13-11 lead on a Stiling kill and a block by Stiling and Virtue. Stiling and Virtue teamed up again on the block to set match point at 14-11. Koester’s kill sided out for Illinois and an OSU error closed the margin to 14-12. A Stiling kill returned the serve to OSU for its second match point and a kill by Stearns ended the game at 15-12. Ohio State hit .280 for the game to .074 for Illinois.%^$
%^$For the match Ohio State hit .340 to .086 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 45-30 advantage in kills and an 11.5-7 margin in blocks. Illinois outserved OSU eight to six and each team had 27 digs.%^$
%^$* Suzie Stiling’s six assist blocks gives her 150 for her career and moved her to 17th on the all-time career list for Ohio State. She passed Brianne Spiers (1995-96, 98-99) with 148.%^$
%^$* Dana Stearns’s 10 kills gives her 1,209 for her career. She needs three kills to pass No. 9 Tricia Stragliotto (1993-96) with 1,211 on OSU’s career list. Her two ace serves gives her 98 in her career and ties her at No. 16 with Vicki Wright (1983-86). She needs four to pass No. 15 Margie Meyers (1984-87) with 101.%^$
