Women’s Ice Hockey Drops Conference Opener, 6-2, To Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team lost its conference opener, 6-2, to host Minnesota Saturday afternoon at Mariucci Arena. With the loss, the Buckeyes slip to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the WCHA and the Golden Gophers improve to 3-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the WCHA.
Freshman defender Emma Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) put the Buckeyes on the board first with her second goal of the season, a power-play goal, at 7:10 in the first period. Assists went to Kelli Halcisak (Fr., Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck St. Mary’s) and Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside). UM left wing Ambria Thomas responded less than two minutes later, at 8:45, scoring her fourth goal of the season from Laura Slominski and La Toya Clarke.
Courtney Kennedy netted the lone goal of the second period, extending the Gophers’ lead to 2-1 at 1:29.
Jerilyn Glenn continued the UM scoring drive at 1:50 in the third period with a power-play goal. Buckeye freshman Jeanne Chapple (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) scored her first career goal and OSU’s second at 2:09 from Frost and Carrie Gill (So., Rochester, Minn/Shattuck-St. Mary’s). The Gophers sealed their victory when Jerilyn Glenn and La Toya Clarke scored for UM at 6:59 and 9:08, respectively.
OSU went 1-for-4 on the power play. UM also converted 1 of 4 opportunities.
The Buckeyes outshot the Gophers, 22-19. OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) recorded 13 saves in the losing effort.
Ohio State returns to action against Minnesota at 2:05 p.m. Sunday in the second game of the series at Mariucci Arena.
