Ohio State Softball Sweeps Miami (Ohio) – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State softball team swept Miami (Ohio) in a doubleheader today at Buckeye Field.
The first game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Miami’s Annie Gerber hit a solo home run over the center field wall. Then, Ohio State pitcher Katie Chain (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) loaded the bases before Nicki Pelfry flew out to center fielder Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) to hold the score at 1-0.
Ohio State got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after third baseman Erin Taylor overthrew the ball to allow Smith to score. Holly English (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Springfield) added another run when Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, putting the Buckeyes ahead, 2-1.
In the top of the seventh, Miami tied the score after Jamie Carey came home on a single by Pelfry. OSU was unable to score in the bottom of the inning to force the game to go into extra innings.
Then in the bottom of the eighth, Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) hit the game-winning two-run double to right field. Pitcher/pinch runner Jenn Elwell (Jr., Dearborn Heights, Mich./ Divine Child) and Smith scored on the play.
Game two was all Buckeyes. Ohio State started the scoring early after Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) hit a two-run homer to left field, with Smith also scoring on the play.
Ohio State scored its next five runs in each of the next four innings. In the bottom of the second, OSU scored after Smith hit a two-run triple to left field to bring the Buckeye lead to 4-0. Himes scored in the third after West hit a single to center field. Roth added a run the next inning on a single to right field driving home Rogeanna Hottinger (So., Newark, Ohio/Newark). In the fifth, it was Kari Crandell (Fr., Hendersonville, Tenn./Hendersonville) adding a run on Elizabeth Kacsanek’s (So., Uniontown, Ohio/Green) single to center field. Miami tried a rally after Kristy Mortaloni hit a two-run homer to left field in the seventh inning, but the Buckeyes went on to win, 7-2.
The Buckeyes will play game four of their softball Scarlet and Gray Championship Series Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.
