Scarlet Defeats the Gray in OSU Swimming – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in the Scarlet vs. Gray intrasquad meet today at the Mike Peppe Auatic Center in Larkins Hall. Both squads split in half in a fight for Buckeye pride, with the men’s Gray team coming out on top and the women’s Scarlet team proving victorious. The overall men’s team set two new relay records in the annual event.
The men’s Scarlet team was led by Brian Malich (Sr., Mason, Ohio/El Dorado (Calif.), who won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a Scarlet vs. Gray record-setting time of 1:25.85 and the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.98.
“I thought Brian swam extremely well,” Bill Wadley, men’s head coach, said. “Tonight he showed why he was a big Ten Champion last season.”
Also performing well for the men were Gray team members Travis Carver (Jr., Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley) and D.J. Kelley (Sr., Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central). Carver won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.64, while Kelley took a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. Kelley also helped the 200 relay medley to a Scarlet vs. Gray record-breaking time of 1:38.08.
“The two relays broke Scarlet vs. Gray records, which is always nice,” Wadley said. “It’s especially nice when you can break intrasquad meet records.”
Newcomer Amanda Treleaven (Fr., Colonol Light, Australia), a member of the Scarlet team, took three wins for the women’s team, including the 200 backstroke (2:08.26), 200 freestyle (1:556.15) and the 200 freestyle relay (3:43.28) events.
Kristin Sendrowski (So., Garden City, N.Y./H. Frank Carey), who swam for the Gray, also performed well taking two wins, one in the 200 individual medley (2:12.98) and the other in the 200 butterfly (2:08.42).
The women’s team will begin the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 18, against Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The men’s season begins Saturday, Oct. 28, also against Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Ohio State Swimming
