COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s soccer team was defeated by Wisconsin, 2-1, in overtime Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The loss brings the Buckeyes to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten. The Badgers are 6-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big Ten.
Wisconsin forward Dominic DaPra put the first point on the board early in the game. After the ball was deflected off an OSU defender, DaPra drove it past goalkeeper Kerry Thompson (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) from about 15 yards out at 3:24.
The next goal would not come until the 72nd minute. With the help of Justin Cook (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla./Oviedo), midfielder Brian Feldhaus (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) scored the game-tying Buckeye goal, firing the ball to the top left corner of the net. It was the only shot to get past Badger goalkeeper Moriba Baker in 92 minutes of action. Baker had 13 saves against Ohio State. Feldhaus’ goal was his sixth in four-consecutive OSU matches.
Narciso Fernandes scored the gamewinner for UW in the second minute of overtime. Fernandes took a pass from Valentine Anozie and shot from about 20 yards out to win the match for Wisconsin.
“We were afraid after Friday’s emotional win that we wouldn’t be able to perform as well today,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach said. “We put ourselves in a hole, letting them score early. Their keeper had some tremendous saves that kept them in the game. We’re extremely disappointed with the loss today.”
The Buckeyes travel to Huntington W.Va. for a contest with the Marshall Thundering Herd at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
