Women’s Tennis Beats No. 25 Marquette – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis doubles team of Laura Maloney (Jr., Barrington, Ill.) and Sadhaf Pervez (Fr., Warren, N.J.) won at No. 3 to clinch a 5-4 victory for the Buckeyes over No. 25 Marquette, Sunday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. The 38th-ranked Buckeyes stay unbeaten at 4-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Golden Eagles to 3-1.
The Buckeyes won four of six singles matches to go into the doubles competition with a 4-2 lead. However, the Golden Eagles won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to tie the contest (4-4) with just the No. 3 doubles match remaining. Maloney and Pervez came back from a 1-4 deficit to defeat Christine DiMasi and Julia Sapozhnikova, 8-6, and seal the win for Ohio State.
“We really needed that win,” Ohio State head coach Chuck Merzbacher said. “I thought that we competed well on every court today. When you keep putting yourself in a position to win, things eventually seem to fall the right way.”
Kristy Dascoli (Jr., Bradenton, Fla.) led the Buckeyes in singles with a three-set victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) at No. 1 over Elisa Penalvo. Monica Rincon (So., Lapeer, Mich.), Claudia Castro (So., Dublin, Ohio) and Maloney all recorded two-set wins in singles for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes will be back in action when Dascoli travels to Dallas, Texas to compete in the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam, Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, Feb. 3-6. The Buckeyes’ next team competition will be Feb. 11 when they play Kansas in Durham, N.C. at noon.
