Women’s Swimming and Diving Prepares for their Final Home Meet – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team (3-7 overall, 0-4 in the Big Ten) will be back in action this weekend. On Saturday, the Buckeyes host Northwestern at 4 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
SENIORS’ FINAL MEET
Saturday will mark the final meet for senior swimmers Erica Fischer, Heidi Hazen, Ann Stephens and diver Carrie Ziebarth. Head Coach Jeanne Fleck will remember the senior class for their leadership and closeness. “Coming in as a first-year coach, I couldn’t have asked for more. My senior class has been just wonderful,” she said. “They have totally taken charge of the team. They really bonded with (assistant coach) Matt (Anderson) and I. I’m really proud and excited for them.”
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Northwestern is coming off consecutive weekend splits in dual meets. Last Friday, the Wildcats defeated Rice, 187-100 but lost to Notre Dame, 158-141. The Saturday before, they split between SEC schools, defeating Tennessee, but falling to Auburn. The Wildcats are led by All-Americans Amy Balcerzak, Courtney Allen, and Dominique Diezi. All three swimmers participated in the U.S. Open in December, with Allen placing eighth in the 50-meter freestyle (26.53). Balcerzak holds Northwestern records in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.87) and 200 individual medley (2:00.31). She was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week two weeks ago after she posted NCAA Standard A qualifying times in the 100 and 200 breast stroke (1:09.13), (2:27.70) in a dual meet against Auburn and Tennessee. Northwestern is coached by Jimmy Tierny.

HOOSIER STATE RECAP
The Buckeyes came away from a weekend trip to Indiana with a win and a loss. On Friday Jan. 14, Ohio State defeated Ball State 139-104 in Muncie, Ind. OSU nearly swept the Cardinals, claiming first place in 10 of the 12 events. Heidi Hazen and Kristen Sander were double-winners. Hazen took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (24.97) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.14). Sander won the 200-yard freestyle (155.96) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.28). Holly Underwood won the one-meter dive with a score of 260.775 and placed second in the three-meter dive, which was won by her teammate, Melanie Johnson, with a score of 293.85. OSU lost 141.50-96.50 to Indiana in Bloomington on Saturday, Jan. 15. Kristen Sendrowski was a double-winner for the Buckeyes, taking first place in the 200 individual medly (2:07.69) and the 200 butterfly (2:07.69). Erica Staley captured first place in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.10). Johnson won the three-meter dive with a score of 303.82 and placed second in the one-meter dive with 252.90 points.
THE BEST OF TIMES
Follwing their winter triainig trip in Puerto Rico, some of the Buckeyes yielded their best times of the year during their weekend in Indiana. At Ball State, Erica Fischer captured first place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.62) and Jo Jo Baran placed third with a time of :55.24 in the 50-yard freestyle. Erica Staley placed fourth (2:14.87). At Indiana, Krissy Sendrowski won the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.69).Tanya Brouilette placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (:24.59) and Heidi Hazen finished third in the 200-yard freestyle(1:56.09).
CHAMPIONSHIPS UP NEXT
The Big Ten Championships, held in Indianapolis, Thursday, Feb. 17- Saturday Feb. 19 will be Ohio State’s next competition.
