Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season with Two Wins – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio— The Ohio State women’s tennis team opened its 2000 dual match season by defeating Illinois State, 8-1, and Akron, 9-0, Saturday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
Against the ISU Redbirds, the Buckeyes won five of the six singles matches in two sets, led by Monica Rincon’s (So., Lapeer, Mich.) victory at No. 1. Illinois State’s Kress Shores defeated OSU’s Taryn Bowen (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) at the No. 6 spot to claim the Redbirds only victory of the day. Ohio State swept the doubles competition, including an 8-0 win at No. 3 by Sadhaf Pervez (Fr., Warren, N.J.) and Laura Maloney (Jr., Barrington, Ill.).
The Buckeyes shutout a depleted Akron team that had only five players available. Michelle Matko (So., `Aurora, Ill.) defeated Arianna Rojas-Serpa, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 to lead the squad. Freshman Katherine Martin (Kennewick, Wash.) put together a 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 5, while fellow classmate Pervez won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
“I was really pleased with our team today,” Ohio State head coach Chuck Merzbacher said. “We were able to play everybody and see where we are as we go into some tough matches next weekend.”
The Buckeyes continue their dual match season as they host West Virginia Friday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m. and No. 25 Marquette Sunday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. Both matches will be held in the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
