COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Kristy Dascoli (Jr., Bradenton, Fla.), ranked No. 50 in the country, advanced to the main singles draw at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships at the Suburban Club of Baltimore County in Pikesville, Md. The main draw will be held Thursday through Sunday.
Dascoli, the No. 1 seed, won three qualifying matches. She defeated Georgia’s Kelly Baskin in the first round (8-3), Amelie Detriviere of Mississippi State in the second round (8-6) and Duke’s Erica Biro in the final round (8-4) to advance. Singles matches were played in eight-game pro sets because rain postponed the start times.
The doubles tandem of Claudia Castro (So., Onalaska, Wis.) and Monica Rincon (So., Lapeer, Mich.) advanced to the second round in doubles qualifying after defeating South Alabama’s Tracey Gobey and Vanda Novakova (8-4). Castro and Rincon lost in the second round to Sandra Fuzesi and Allison Sinclair of Michigan (9-7).
Sophomore Michelle Matko (So., Aurora, Ill.) lost her first round qualifying match to Katarzyna Malec of UNLV, 8-3.
The seventh-ranked doubles team of Dascoli and Briana Harris (Jr., Bradenton, Fla.) has already qualified for the main draw of the doubles competition at the event. The duo holds the fourth seed in the draw.
