1998-99 Season Review and Highlights Buckeyes improve and move up in the record book. Columbus, Ohio- The Ohio State womens swimming and diving team finished the 1998-99 season with a record of 8-5 and 1-1 in the Big Ten, a big improvement from a 7-7 record during the 1997-98 season.
1999 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
The womens Big Ten Championship meet was held at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Feb. 18-20. Overall the Buckeyes finished in ninth place with 189 points ahead of Purdue and Michigan State. At the first day of competition, diver Carrie Ziebarth finished eighth in the 1-meter event with 378.55 points, and Holly Underwood tenth with 352.55 points. The 400 medley relay team of Julie Hutzler, Keryn Krynauw, Heidi Hazen , and Ann Stephens finished sixth and the 200 freestyle relay team of Tanya Brouillette, Stephens, Hazen, and JoJo Baran finished tenth with a time of 1:35.88. After the first day of competition the Buckeyes were in last place with 14 points, but moved up three spots after day two with 153 points. The OSU divers led the team to move up three spots and finish the day with 153 points. Carrie Ziebarth led the way for the Buckeyes finishing third in the 3-meter event with 479.85, Holly Underwood 7th score, and Melanie Johnson 10th score. Keryn Krynuw finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke and Jo Jo Baran finished 14th. Heidi Hazen swam to an eleventh placed finish in the 100 butterfly event. Ann Stephens and Julie Hutzler finished 15th and 16th respectively in the 100 backstroke. The 200 medley relay of Hutzler, Hazen, Krynauw, and Stephens placed eighth. During the final day of competition Keryn Krynauw led the team with a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke. The 400 medley relay team of Stephens, Hazen, Sander, and Brouillette finished tenth. Freshman Krissy Sendrowski finished 13th in the 200 butterfly and Ann Stephens finished 15th in the 200 backstroke event. Fourteen individual season bests were set at the Big Ten Championships for the Buckeyes. Minnesota won the Big Ten Championships for the first time its history. It was a record-setting meet with seven new Big Ten records set. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
The Buckeyes finished the season improving last seasons 7-7 record. There are several things to note when looking back at the 1998-99 season, from the beginning to the end.
THREE MOVE UP IN RECORD BOOK
Three Buckeyes moved up in the all time Ohio State record book for womens swimming. Junior, Ann Stephens recorded the best time in OSU history in the 100 backstroke with a time of :56.89 at the Michigan Invitational. Freshman, Keryn Krynauw recorded the second fastest time in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.39 at Big Tens. She now holds the fastest time in OSU history in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.47 set at NCAA Championships. Junior Heidi Hazen replaced herself in the 100 butterfly by improving her time to :55.83 at Big Ten Championships, the third fastest time in OSU history.
RECORD SETTING MEET
The annual Scarlet vs. Gray intersquad meet held October 23, 1998 was a record breaker for the Buckeyes. Four meet records were set in the 100 backstroke, 100 and 200 breaststroke, and the 200 medley relay events. Senior Julie Hutzler now holds the 100 backstroke meet record with a time of :58.77. Freshman, Keryn Krynauw set two records in her first meet as a Buckeye in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with winning times of 1:05.38 and 2:20.00. The 200 medley relay of Julie Huztler, Jericho Strausbaugh, Heidi Hazen, and Jo Jo Baran destroyed the meet record by almost five seconds for a winning time of 1:48.98 and Erica Fischer won four of the five events she swam.
ON THE ROAD
The Buckeyes first eight meets of the season were on the road. They did not swim at home in their own water til Jan. 6, 1999 against Big Ten rival Penn State.
HAZEN BIG TEN SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Junior Heidi Hazen was named Big Ten swimmer of the week Dec. 3, 1998 after a successful weekend. Hazen paced OSU to the vic tory over Cleveland State, winning the 100 butterfly with a time of :57.72. She also helped the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays to first place finishes with times of 1:48.12 and 1:39.35 respectively.
HUTZLER REMAINED UNDEFEATED IN 1998
Senior Julie Hutzler remained unbeaten in the 100 and 200 backstroke events in dual meets until the tenth meet of the season. She posted her best time in the 100 (:57.97) at the Miami Invitational and the in the 200 (2:04.49) at Michigan State. During the 1997-98 season Hutzler finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships.
FLORIDA TRAINING TRIP RESULTS IN WIN
While the Buckeyes were on their training trip to Florida, they competed against Miami (Fla.) and Florida Atlantic. OSU lost to Miami, 104.5-135.5 and defeated Florida Atlantic, 124-78.
NCAA QUALIFIERS
Keryn Krynauw and Heidi Hazen both qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.45 (Standard B Cut) and the 100 butterfly with a time of :55.84 (Standard B Cut). Keryn Krynauw finished 17th in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA championships in Champaign Ill. At the meet she broke the OSU record with a time of 2:15.47.
ZIEBARTH HITS SEASON HIGH
Junior diver Carrie Ziebarth earned her regular season high of 297.07 points in the 1-meter diving event against Denison. This topped her previous high of 265.73 points set at Bowling Green on Nov. 13, 1998.
ZIEBARTH NAMED BIG TEN DIVER OF THE WEEK
Carrie Ziebarth was named Big Ten Diver of the week for Feb. 3, 1999 after a winning weekend. Ziebarth won both the 1 and 3 meter diving events against Denison, earning her season high of 297.07 in the 1-meter diving event. She continued her success on Saturday winning the 3-meter event. She has qualified for the NCCAs in both the 1 and 3-meter diving events.
KRYNAUW BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD
Freshman Keryn Krynauw broke the school record for the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships in Champaign Ill. Krynauws time of 2:15.47 placed her 17th overall, smashing the previous seven-year-old Buckeye best of 2:15.96. The race was recorded as the fastest 200 breaststroke in NCAA history.
MEET BY MEET RECAP MEET 1 VS. OHIO U. 11/6
The Buckeyes fell just short in their first meet against the Bobcats, 118-125. OSUs Julie Hutzler (100 back), Heidi Hazen (100 butterfly) and Keryn Krynauw (100 breaststroke) each won their individual events as well as the 400 medley relay that included JoJo Baran.
MEET 2 VS. MICHIGAN STATE 11/13
OSU won its first Big Ten meet of the season 156-144. Four Buckeyes were triple winners: Erica Fischer, Heidi Hazen, Julie Hutzler and Keryn Krynauw. Each won their individual events as well as contributing to the 200 medley relay win.
MEET 3 VS. BOWLING GREEN 11/14
OSU earned its second victory for the weekend 138-94. Buckeyes Carrie Ziebarth and Melanie Johnson took home wins in the1 and 3 meter diving events . Swimmers Erica Fischer, Julie Hutzler, Heidi Hazen each had two wins.
MEET 4 VS. WEST VIRGINIA 11/20
The Bucks dominated at West Virginia, 161-81, taking home a win in all events but one. Erica Fischer won all three events she swam, while the relays swept the meet taking home wins in both the 200 medley and 800 free relays.
MEET 5 VS. CLEVELAND STATE 11/24
The Buckeyes defeated Cleveland State (75-20). Winning every event except one. Freshman Keryn Krynauw earned her best time of the season in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.85). Erica Fischer won both the 200 individual medley (2:08.92) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.15).
MEET 6 AT MIAMI (O.) INVITATIONAL 12/3
Junior Heidi Hazen paced the Bucks with a first place finish in the 100 butterfly (:55.84). Tennessee, Kenyon and Miami O. finished ahead of OSU respectively. The 200 and 800 freestyle relays both finished second, as did the 200 medley relay. Other top performers were Julie Hutzler who finished second in the 100 backstroke, and Keryn Krynauw who finished third in the 100 breaststroke.
MEET 7 & 8 VS. MIAMI & FLORIDA ATLANTIC
While the Buckeyes were on their training trip to Florida, they competed against Miami (Fla.) and Florida Atlantic. OSU lost to Miami, 104.5-135.5, and defeated Florida Atlantic 124-78.
MEET 9 VS. PENN STATE 1/9/99
OSU fell short to Big Ten rival Penn State, 17-129. The Buckeyes finished first in five individual events. Heidi Hazen won both the 100 freestyle and butterfly.
MEET 10 VS. Notre Dame & Illinois 1/16
Carrie Ziebarth won the 1 meter diving event and Keryn Krynauw won the 200 breaststroke event, but the Buckeyes did not come out on top. OSU finished third with 253.50 points against No. 23 Notre Dame 409.50, and Big Ten rival Illinois with 380 points. The 200 medley relay team recorded its season best time of 1:47.52.
MEET 11 VS. CINCINNATI 1/22
The Buckeyes dominated the visiting Bearcats 127-114. Leading the way was Heidi Hazen, who won the 100 butterfly and was also a member of the winning 400 medley relay. Ann Stephens swam her best time of the season in the 100 butterfly :57.92 and Kristin Sander had her best time in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.44.
MEET 12 VS. DENISON 1/29
The Buckeyes defeated Denison 154-89. Kristin Sendrowski was a triple winner, capturing the 200 butterfly, 500 freestyle and contributing to the winning 400 freestyle relay. Both Ann Stephens and Carrie Ziebarth were double winners. Both the 400 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relays finished first.
MEET 13 VS. WRIGHT STATE 1/30
The Buckeyes captured every event against the Raiders. OSU improved its record to 8-3 and added to its winning streak of three in a row. Tanya Brouillette and Heidi Hazen both won their individual events and contributed to both winning relays.
MEET 14 VS. SYRACUSE 2/5
OSU fell to the Syracuse Orangewomen 139-103. Carrie Ziebarth finished first in both the 1 and 3-meter diving events earning her season high of 318.15. Keryn Krynauw and Kristin Sendrowski won the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly respectively. The Buckeyes also captured the 400 medley relay event.
MEET 15 VS. PITTSBURGH
OSU fell to Pittsburgh 146-97 in its last home meet of the season. Ann Stephens was a double winner, capturing the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Heidi Hazen and Keryn Krynauw both won their individual events, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke respectively.
