Weigel’s Home Run Lifts Softball Over Miami – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – With the Ohio State Buckeyes (9-12 overall, 0-0 in Big Ten) down 2-1 going into the sixth inning, one swing of the bat by Renae Weigel (Jr., Coldwater, Ohio), changed the outcome of game.
Katie Wessendorf (So., Waterville, Ohio) led off the sixth with a screaming double over the head of the MU centerfielder Katie Kelly. Then off a 2-0 offering by starting pitcher Abbey Arnold, Weigel lifted a ball over the leftfield wall to give OSU its first lead of the afternoon. The blast was the second of the year for the junior co-captain and capped off a 2-for-2 game. “She threw a changeup so I had to lunge at the ball at the very last second,” Weigel said. “The next thing I knew, the ball was over the fence.”
Inside the circle, Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio) was solid. She went the distance, giving up only one earned run and striking out a pair.
“I can’t say enough about Renae coming through in the clutch for us – both offensively and defensively,” head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Toni pitched great. Last weekend, she had a couple of bad outings, so it’s nice to see her getting back on track.”
The Buckeyes will play host to a doubleheader against Cleveland State, tomorrow at 3 p.m.
NOTES:
– Today’s matchup was originally scheduled as a doubleheader. Prior to the game, both coaches agreed to play just a single game.
– Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) saw her season high 11-game hitting streak come to an end.
