Last Home Meet of the Season Sat. for Buckeye Men’s Gymnastics – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes traveled to the University of Illinois last weekend and lost 230.00-227.750 to an Illini team that was set on, and succeeded in, upsetting Ohio State. Illinois recorded a new school record for its team total. Ohio State did not, however, fall from its no. 2 ranking and remains solid in that spot entering this weekend’s match-up against Illinois-Chicago. Emotions will be running high for the Buckeye squad, as it marks the final home meet of the season, and careers, of four seniors. The class of 99 has recorded a remarkable 24-2 record in dual meets and has a 10-0 consecutive home win dual meet streak. Senior Night will honor Michael Canales (Rochester, N.Y.), Tim Elsner (Middletown, N.J.), Peter Landry (Lewiston, Maine) and Doug Stibel (Canton, Mich.).
OHIO STATE’S CLASS OF 1999
The four seniors comprising the class of 1999 has compiled an impressive list of achievements, both as a team and individually. They were integral parts of the team that, during their senior year, won the NCAA National Championship and a string of Big Ten Championships. Individually, Peter Landry and Doug Stibel both earned All-America recognition after their campaigns last year, and all of the four rank among the nations leaders. They leave behind a legacy of achivement and performance that has continued to keep Ohio State at the top of the polls and compile national championships.
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO FLAMES
The University of Chicago (2-5) concentrates most of its power on the still rings, placing two of its squad in the top twenty nationally. It is led by Michael DAntino, currently ranked third in the nation on the rings. DAntino is joined by Charlie Nelson, who sits 13th in the rankings for the rings.
MICHAEL MORGAN COMING BACK
Michael Morgan will return to the Buckeye squad next year, after being granted a medical redshirt for this season. An All-American, Morgan suffered an injury to his wrist and was unable to compete for Ohio State this year. OHIO STATE REMAINS SECOND IN POLLS
In the latest Coaches Poll, the Buckeyes remain second. Iowa continues to hold the top spot. The full poll is as follows:

BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
The Buckeyes will have a final tune-up against Temple on March 20 before heading to Iowa City, Iowa for the Big Ten Championship on March 26-27. The last time Ohio State won a Big Ten team title was in 1997, while Peter Landry is the defending Big Ten Champion on teh parallel bars. Landry and Doug Stibel were all-Big Ten selections after last years Championship as well. After the Big Ten Championship, the team will have time to prepare for the NCAA Eastern Regional on April 10, hosted by the University of Illinois. The season concludes on April 22-24 at the NCAA Championship hosted by the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb.
