Women’s Tennis Eases Past Michigan State, 6-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes capped off its Big Ten opening weekend in style Sunday afternoon by defeating the Michigan State Spartans, 6-1, at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. OSUs record moves to 7-3 (2-0 Big Ten) while MSU drops to 8-2 (1-2 Big Ten).
%^$For the second consecutive day, Ohio State had to rebound from losing the doubles point, and for the second consecutive day, it was Kristy Dascoli (So., Bradenton, Fla.) who led the comeback. She wasted no time at No. 1 singles disposing of Brooke West, 6-2, 6-1. Finishing at approximately the same time as Dascoli was Monica Rincon (Lapeer, Mich.), who defeated Michigan State’s Kelli Hayes, 6-4, 6-1.
%^$The Buckeyes kept on rolling. Michelle Matko (Fr., Aurora, Ill.), Briana Harris (So., Bradenton, Fla.) and Laura Maloney (So., Barrington, Ill.) put together straight set wins to give Ohio State an insurmountable 5-1 lead.
%^$The only Buckeye to struggle in singles was Claudio Castro (Fr., Onalaska, Wis.). After winning the first set over Jaime Tannenbaum, 6-4, Castro dropped the second, 6-3. But she pulled it together to play fabulous tennis in the clutch as she took the third, 6-2.
%^$Coupled with yesterday’s win over Michigan, the Buckeyes are now 2-0 in the Big Ten. OSUs next match is Friday, March 5, against the Penn State Nittany Lions in University Park, Pa. The first toss is scheduled to go up at 3:30 p.m.
