Atlanta, Ga. – The Ohio State Buckeyes (2-5 overall) won its opening round game at the Georgia State Softball Classic over Indiana State, 2-1.
The Sycamores struck first in the bottom of the second inning. ISUs Kristin DiFilipo hit a one-run double to put her team up 1-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, OSU began its comeback. Samantha Kimura (Fr., Placentia, Calif.) blasted a double to centerfield. She was then replaced by Meaghan Robinson (Sr., Naples, Fla.) who scored off a Katie Wessendorf (So., Waterville, Ohio) single.
The Buckeyes took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning. Cheryl Palaroan (Sr., Reno, Nev.) singled and stole second base. Two batters later, Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) drove home the winning run.
Inside the circle, Robinson (1-3) notched her first win of the 1999 season. She went the distance giving up only one run (which was unearned) and recording seven strikeouts.
ISUs Carrie Przygocki was charged with the loss.
“Its good to start any tournament off with a win,” Head Coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Meaghan had another excellent outing for us and Samantha hit the heck out of the ball.”
The Buckeyes will play their next game this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against St. Louis.
