Ohio State men’s gymnast Jamie Natalie (So., Hockessin, Del.) is 12th after the first day of competition in the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. Former Buckeye and three-time national champion Blaine Wilson led the preliminary session. The finals will take place on Sat. night at 8:00 p.m. Pacific time. The top 36 all around scorers advance to Sat. night’s finals. The preliminary scores, however, do not carry over to the final session.
Three Olympians, all seven members of the 1997 World Championships Team and the top young prospects for the 2000 Sydney Olympics Games have gathered to compete at this weekend’s event. Heading the list of the best the USA has to offer in men’s gymnastics is Blaine Wilson (Columbus, Ohio), a 1996 Olympian who last summer became the first American to win three consecutive national championships since Kurt Thomas achieved the feat 20 years before.
