Buckeyes Notch First Win of the Season – Ohio State Buckeyes

Honolulu, Hawaii – The Ohio State Buckeyes (1-3 overall), notched their first win of the 1999 season, a 4-2 victory over the Baylor Bears in Day Two of the Paradise Classic.
Ohio State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Stacy Roth (Fr., Wauseon, Ohio), drove in Anna Smith (Fr., Walnut, Calif.) from second base with a two out single. But the lead was short lived because Baylor answered right away with a two out RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at one each.
The Buckeyes stayed on the attack and took the lead for good in the third inning. With two outs, Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio) lined a double to left-centerfield. Roth would again step up for the Buckeyes with another RBI single, giving OSU a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Buckeyes added an important insurance run. Samantha Kimura (Fr., Placentia, Calif.) led off with a crushing double to leftfield. After advancing to third base off a fielders choice, Kimura would score off a wild pitch by Baylor hurler Stacy Allison.
Baylor brought the score to 3-2 in bottom half of the fourth inning but Ohio State struck again in the top of the fifth inning. Smith, after getting on base off a fielder’s chance and advancing to third with a stolen base and erred throw by the BU catcher, received a free pass home off another wild pitch by Allison.
In the circle, Hileman (1-1) earned her first win of the season. She pitched an effective complete game, giving up only one earned run in the process.
Game Notes
Impressive Freshmen – Stacy Roth’s two RBI afternoon marked the first multiple RBI performance of her career. Samantha Kimura led off the second inning with her first career hit – a single to leftfield off Baylor’s Carrie Arn. Her fourth inning double was the first extra base hit of her career and marked the first multiple hit game of her short career.
Streak Stopped – Not only did the game mark the first ever start at shortstop by Natalie Woods (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz.), a string of 109 consecutive starts at shortstop came to an end for Renae Weigel (Jr., Coldwater, Ohio).
