Buckeyes Advance in ITA Midwest Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State women’s tennis player Kristy Dascoli (Jr., Bradenton, Fla.) will be competing for the singles title, while Dascoli and doubles partner Briana Harris (Jr., Bradenton, Fla.) have advanced to the semifinal round, at the ITA Midwest Regional. The singles final begins tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the doubles semifinal and final to follow, at The Racquet Club of Columbus (1100 Bethel Rd.).
No. 50-ranked Dascoli, the third seed, defeated seventh-ranked Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame, the No. 1 seed, in a hard-fought three-set match (6-7 (6), 7-5, 7-5). Dascoli won three two-set matches to reach the semifinals, including a victory over Northwestern’s Colleen Cheng in the quarterfinal. Dascoli will face Northwestern’s Katherine Nasser in the final match.
Dascoli and Harris, ranked seventh in the country and the No. 2-seed, defeated Sauska/Simonsen of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semifinal. The tandem will face Notre Dame’s Dasso and Varnum in the semifinal round, with the winner going up against Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny of Purdue for the doubles title.
Michelle Matko (So., Aurora, Ill.) won five matches to claim the singles consolation crown. In the semifinal she defeated Lia Jackson of Northwestern in three sets before winning the final match by default.
Monica Rincon (So., Lapeer, Mich.), after winning three matches to qualify for the main draw, won three matches before falling in the round of 16 to Dasso, the top seed. Rincon defeated Laura Garcia of Marquette in three sets in the round of 32.
The singles champions and finalists and the doubles champion earn berths into the 2000 Rolex National Indoor Championships, the third leg of the Collegiate Grand Slam (Feb. 3-6), in Dallas.
