Women’s Volleyball Wins 3-0 At Illinois – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (12-8 overall, 6-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad put together a 15-8, 15-13, 15-9 win over Illinois (12-7, 7-5) Friday night in Huff Gym in front of 2,105 fans. Buckeye teammates Jen Flynn and Rosie Snow recorded 16 kills each and Dana Stearns and Suzie Stiling added 12 each, while Flynn picked up a match-high 16 digs. Betsy Spicer of Illinois scored a team-high 10 kills with Tracey Marshall and Lydia Gard adding nine each. Illini Shadia Haddad contributed seven kills and a team-high 11 digs.
%^$The Buckeyes opened game one with ace serves by Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns. Illini responded with a kill by Lydia Gard and a block by Sara Sorrell and Gard to tie the game at two. Three Illinois errors, an ace serve by Rosie Snow and a kill by Jen Flynn put OSU up 7-2. With Ohio State ahead 10-5, two OSU errors cut the lead to 10-8. Three Snow kills expanded the lead to 13-7 for the Buckeyes. Illini Tracey Marshall cut the lead to 13-8 with a kill, but an attack error by Illinois and a kill by Suzie Stiling ended the game, 15-8, in favor of Ohio State. In the game, the Buckeyes hit .204 to .159 for the Illini.
%^$Game two opened with Illinois going up 1-0 on an OSU attack error. The Buckeyes took a 5-1 lead and expanded that lead to 9-2. The Illini came back to tie the game at nine and took a 11-9 lead on a kill by Shadia Haddad and an OSU error. OSU responded with kills by Jen Flynn and Suzie Stiling to tie the game at 11. Rosie Snow’s kill put OSU up 12-11 and an Illinois error put the lead at 13-11. An Illini kill by Sara Sorrell and an OSU error tied the game at 13. After a sideout kill by Flynn, kills by Snow and Stiling finished the game at 15-13. Ohio State hit .317 for the game to .277 for Illinois.
%^$A 1-0 Ohio State lead quickly became a 3-1 Illinois lead off two OSU errors and a kill by Melissa Beitz in game three. OSU tied the game at three off an Illini error and an ace serve by Shelly Draeger. An OSU error gave Illinois a 4-3 lead, but a kill by Rosie Snow, a solo block by Dana Stearns and a block by Stearns and Rosie Snow put OSU ahead 6-4. Kills by Shelly Draeger and Suzie Stiling expanded the OSU lead to 8-4. Two kills by Illini Lydia Gard and an OSU error cut the lead to 8-7. OSU took a 10-7 lead on a UI hitting error and a block by Draeger and Stearns. The Illini again closed to one (10-9) with a service ace by Amber Lindner and an OSU hitting error. Two Illini errors and a block by Stearns and Jen Flynn put the Buckeyes up 13-9. Flynn’s kill set match point at 14-9 and an UI error ended the game at 15-9. For the game Ohio State hit .114 to -.068 for the Illini.
%^$Ohio State hit .214 for the match to .132 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 62 to 43 advantage in kills. OSU outblocked the Illini 13 to 10 with six blocks from Dana Stearns (1-5) and five each from Suzie Stiling (0-5) and Jen Flynn (2-3). Illinois block leaders were Lydia Gard with six (0-6) and Sara Sorrell with five (0-5). The Buckeyes had a 52-49 advantage in digs and a seven to one margin in ace serves with Rosie Snow, Stearns and Shelly Draeger each serving two aces. OSU setter Katie Virtue had 53 assists, nine digs and four assist blocks while Illini setter Melissa Beitz had 36 assists and eight digs.
