Women’s Volleyball Defeats Purdue In A Close One – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (16-10 overall, 10-9 Big Ten, fifth) women’s volleyball squad defeated Purdue (15-13, 7-12, 8th) in a close four-game match. The Buckeyes won 16-14, 15-13, 14-16, 15-13 in a two hour, 12 minute sideout battle. Purdue’s Julie Doud scored a match-high 24 kills for the Boilermakers with Aneska Arosarena adding 16 and Sarah Emke 13. OSU’s Jen Flynn had a team-high 23 kills, tying her career-high set earlier this season against Penn State. Adding to the Buckeyes scoring was Shelly Draeger with 16, Anne Botica with 14 and Dana Stearns with 11.
%^$Purdue opened a 3-0 lead in game one, but the Buckeyes tied the game at six. A Sue Calligaris kills and a Purdue error gave OSU an 8-6 lead. Purdue cut the lead to 8-7 on a block by Taryn Catlin and Connie Paul. Ohio State made the lead 10-7 on an ace serve by Shelly Draeger and an overpass block by Suzie Stiling. A Purdue error and two kills by Jen Flynn made the OSU lead 13-7. Purdue responded with two kills by Aneska Arosarena and an OSU error to cut the Buckeye lead to 13-10 before an OSU timeout. Three Buckeye hitting errors tied the game at 13. An Arosarena kill set game point for Purdue at 14-13. A side out kill by Draeger returned the serve to OSU. A Nikki Cisco ace serve and a kill by Ann Botica put Ohio State at game point, 15-14, and a solo block by Botica ended the game at 16-14. Purdue hit .304 for the game to .220 for Ohio State. Purdue’s Arosarena and Julie Doud had six kills each in the game while Jen Flynn had nine and Draeger seven for Ohio State.
%^$After a 1-0 Buckeye lead, Purdue took a 3-1 lead and expanded it to 6-2. Ohio State closed to within one at 6-5 but an ace serve by Taryn Catlin and kills by Maegan Petersen and Julie Doud gave Purdue a 9-5 lead. A Sarah Emke kill put Purdue up 10-5. A Purdue error and a kill by Rosie Snow cut the lead to 10-7. Purdue’s Aneska Arosarena connected for a kill and an OSU error gave the Boilermakers a five-point lead at 12-7. OSU’s Jen Flynn picked up two kills and Katie Virtue added another along with two Purdue errors to tie the game at 12. The Boilermakers went up 13-12 on an OSU error, but an ace serve by Anne Botica tied the game at 13. After a Purdue timeout a kill by Dana Stearns made it game point at 14-13 and a Purdue error ended the game at 15-13. Ohio State hit .298 for the game to .250 for Purdue. Purdue’s Sarah Emke had nine kills in the game with Doud adding six. Buckeye Flynn scored seven kills with Shelly Draeger and Stearns adding four each.
%^$Ohio State opened a 2-0 lead in game three and built it to a 7-2 margin. At 7-3, three kills by Julie Doud and an OSU error tied the game at seven. An exchange of errors raised the score to 8-8. Sarah Emke’s ace serve put Purdue up 9-8 but a Dana Stearns kill tied the game at nine. A block by Stearns and Rosie Snow and an ace serve by Shelly Draeger put Ohio State ahead 11-9 as Purdue called time out. Two Purdue errors raised the Buckeye lead to 13-9, but three Buckeye errors cut the lead to 13-12. A Boilermaker error set game/match point at 14-12. Purdue stopped Ohio State five times at 14-12. Four consecutive Ohio State hitting errors ended the game for Purdue at 16-14. The Boilermakers hit .130 for the game to .118 for Ohio State. Purdue’s Doud had seven kills and Arosarena added five, while Draeger and Stearns had five each for Ohio State.
%^$Game four saw ties at two and four before an ace serve by Aneska Arosarena gave Purdue a 5-4 lead. A kill by Suzie Stiling tied the game at five and a Purdue error gave OSU a 6-5 lead. A Jen Flynn kill and a Purdue error have OSU an 8-5 lead as the Boilermakers called time out. Sarah Emke’s kill, a block by Emke and Christy Case and a Buckeye error tied the game at eight. A Flynn kill and two Purdue errors gave Ohio State the lead at 11-8 as Purdue called timeout. A kill by Anne Botica and an ace serve by Flynn put Ohio State up 13-8 before a kill by Julie Doud sided out to Purdue. Three Buckeye errors cut the OSU lead to 13-11 as Ohio State called time out. An Arosarena kill and a Buckeye error tied the game at 13 but a Dana Stearns kill sided the ball back to Ohio State. Stearns and Katie Virtue combined for a block to set game/match point at 14-13 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes closed the game on a Botica kill at 15-13. Purdue outhit OSU .103 to .051 for the game. OSU’s Botica had six kills in the game to lead the Buckeyes with Doud collecting five for Purdue.
%^$For the match, Purdue outhit Ohio State .202 to .179, with the Buckeyes have a 78 to 69 edge in kills. OSU outblocked Purdue 15 to nine with Suzie Stiling collecting a match-high six blocks for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had a 71 to 66 advantage in digs with Katie Virtue’s 13, a career-high for the OSU setter. The Buckeyes served seven aces to five for Purdue. Buckeye Anne Botica equalled her career-high the three aces.
%^$Ohio State closes the regular season Saturday against Wisconsin (20-9, 13-6, 3rd), a 16-14, 10-15, 15-5, 15-9 loser to No. 1 Penn State (29-1, 19-0, 1st) Friday night. Purdue will face Penn State Saturday.%^$
