Women’s Volleyball Hosts Purdue and Wisconsin – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (15-10 overall, 9-9 Big Ten, tied for 5th in the Big Ten) closes the regular season this weekend with matches against Purdue (15-12, 7-11) and Wisconsin (20-8, 13-5). OSU faces the Boilermakers Friday night and Wisconsin Saturday. Both match begin at 7 p.m.
The Buckeyes split road matches last weekend at Iowa and Minnesota. OSU defeated Iowa 15-6, 15-11, 15-6 and lost to Minnesota 4-15, 5-15, 15-3, 9-15.
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State, offensively, is led by Rosie Snow who averages 3.71 kills (330) per game. Jen Flynn ranks second with a 3.16 average on 291 kills. Dana Stearns is the team’s top percentage hitter at .328 with Sue Calligaris second at .324. On the serve, Flynn has a team-high 26 aces with Katie Virtue at 22 aces. Virtue is averaging 12.97 assists per game on 1,128 assists. Defensively, Snow has a team-high 239 digs (2.69) with Flynn second with a 2.40 average (221). Suzie Stiling (11-69, .91) has a team-high 80 blocks and Stearns is second (3-54, .76) with 57 total blocks.
As a team, Ohio State is hitting .239 and averaging 16.53 kills per game. OSU averages 2.18 blocks, 13.52 digs and 1.43 aces per game. Buckeye opponents are hitting .210 and average 14.04 kills per game. Opponents average 2.51 blocks, 12.09 digs and .94 aces per game.

WISCONSIN MATCH ON DELAYED CABLECAST
Central Ohio SPORT! Television will delay cablecast the Wisconsin match locally on Insight Communications Ch. 36 and Time Warner Ch. 24. The match will be carried Sunday, Nov. 28 and Monday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. Randy Rhinehart will call the action with former Ohio State All-American Audrey (DiPronio) Flaugh providing the color. With two ace serves at Iowa, Jen Flynn now has 100 aces for her career. She now ranks 15th on the Ohio State career list passing Vicki Wright (1983-86) who has 98.
STEARNS 5TH IN CAREER ASSIST BLOCKS
With two assist blocks against Iowa and Minnesota last weekend, Dana Stearns raised her career total to 263. She now ranks fifth on the Ohio State career list passing Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) who has 260.
STEARNS IN RELIEF
Coming off the bench last week, Dana Stearns combined for 15 kills with only four errors in 25 attempts for a .440 hitting percentage. She had seven kills, two errors in 13 attempts (.385) at Iowa with two digs and two assist blocks. Against Minnesota Stearns had eight kills, two errors in 12 attempts (.500) with six digs and two assist blocks.
BOTICA GIVES EFFORT
Coming off the bench against Minnesota, Ann Botica recorded double-figure kills (10) in the match and added an ace serve, two digs and an assist block. It marked the fourth time this season she has come in and produced double-figure kills.
FLYNN RECORDS DOUBLE FIGURES
With 13 kills against Iowa and Minnesota, Jen Flynn has produced double-figure kills in her last four matches. The previous week, she had 17 kills against Michigan State and 12 against Michigan. Flynn has had 16 matches this season with double-figure kills with a career-high 23 against Penn State.
CALLIGARIS BACK AS A STARTER
Returning as a starter last weekend, Sue Calligaris had 12 kills and hit .450 against Iowa. Her starts at Iowa and Minnesota gives her 13 on the season.
OSU 1-5 AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The upset win at Wisconsin marked OSU’s first win this season over a nationally-ranked squad. The Badgers were ranked 24th and OSU was unranked. Ohio State is now 1-4 against ranked opponents, losing to No. 20 @Michigan (2-3), to No. 1 @Penn State (0-3), to No. 23 Minnesota (2-3), No. 1 Penn State (1-3) and No. 20 Minnesota (1-3)

SENIOR SALUTE
Five Ohio State student-athletes are closing out their careers this season for the Buckeyes. Brianne Spiers, Rosie Snow, Jen Flynn, Laura Stalling and Shellye Sills are playing their final matches in St. John Arena this weekend. Over the last four years, Ohio State has an 83-41 overall record (.669)
Brianne Spiers (1995-99)
A fifth-year senior who missed the 1997 season and parts of the last two seasons with an injury. Spiers has played in 78 of 119 matches. Her career-high 15 kills against Florida in Hawaii helped the Buckeyes defeat the Gators.
Rosie Snow (1996-99)
An All-Big Ten selection in 1997, Snow has played in 115 of 124 matches. She ranks ninth in career kills with 1,702 and has had 57 matches with double-figure kills.
Jen Flynn (1996-99)
An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 1997, Flynn is an Academic All-Big Ten and an Ohio State Scholar Athlete. She started at setter her sophomore an junior seasons, playing outside hitter as a freshman and senior. Flynn is fourth in career assists with 3,205, seventh in career digs with 1,099 and eighth in career assist blocks with 236. In all she ranks in the top 20 in 11 career categories.
Laura Stalling (1996-99)
An Academic All-Big Ten selection and an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, Stalling has played in 41 of 124 matches.
Shellye Sills (1997-99)
A transfer from Toledo after her freshmen year, Sills has played in 51 of 91 matches. She played in 22 matches in 1997 and 23 in 1998 collecting 179 total blocks. Her career total of 181 career blocks give her a 1.22 blocks per game average, the best ever at Ohio State.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone is in his 18th year at Ohio State. He has a 396-179 (.689) record with the Buckeyes and is 227-98 (.698) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 10 years has only finished below third once. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 10 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 21-year career record is 446-221 (.669).
THE DEAN OF THE BIG TEN COACHES
Head coach Jim Stone begins his 18th-year in the Big Ten at Ohio State. Closest to Stone is Mike Hebert of Minnesota who is entering his 17th season. He spent 14 years at Illinois and the last three at Minnesota.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
The Buckeyes are scheduled for eight televised matches this season. OSU’s Nov. 5 match at Illinois will be carried by ESPN2. Broadcast of the match will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern. Ohio State also will take part in the Fox Sports Chicago Big Ten package. OSU’s match against Michigan Nov. 14 will be broadcast at 1:30 a.m. Eastern on Monday.
Ohio State also will have six matches produced by Central Ohio SPORT! Television. The following matches will be broadcasted by tape delay: Temple match Sept. 21 and 22, Illinois Oct. 5 and 6, Iowa Oct. 24 and 26, Penn State Oct. 28 and 29, Michigan State Nov. 13 and 14, Wisconsin Nov. 28 and 29. The matches will be replayed at 7 p.m. on Insight Communications (Ch. 36) and Time Warner (Ch. 24).
NEW LOOK FLOOR AT ST. JOHN ARENA
After 42 years of having a basketball floor painted on the floor of St. John Arena, a new look greets the 1999 season of volleyball. Earlier this year, the floor of St. John Arena was sanded down to removed the basketball court markings. In its place is a painted volleyball court for use by the women’s and men’s teams.
BUCKEYES MAKE THE GRADE
Ohio State had four student-athletes honored by the Big Ten for their academic standing. Angelee Abbring, Jen Flynn, Laura Stalling and Dana Stearns were honored as Academic All-Big Ten selections. In addition, six players were honored as Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Award Winners. Included with the four players listed above were freshmen Erin Baker and Carey Cavanaugh.
NATIONAL TEAM CONNECTION
Former Buckeye Laura Davis (1991-94) continues in volleyball as a member of the United States National team. She plays the libero position, a back-row only player. Davis, a two-time All-American, was the 1994 National Player of the Year. Jenny Jackson (1992-95), a member of the national team for the past several years left the team earlier this year to pursue a career in engineering. Jackson was a 1994 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten selection.
IN THE PROFESSIONAL RANKS
Two former OSU players, Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) and Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) are currently playing professionally in Europe. Stragliotto, a 1995 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten pick is playing in Italy while Wouters, a 1995 All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year is playing in Germany.
HOLLY O’LEARY ENTERS HALL OF FAME
Former Buckeye Holly O’Leary (1987-90) of Cincinnati, Ohio was inducted into the Ohio State Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 10. A two-time all-American, O’Leary was the 1989 Big Ten Player of the Year and helped OSU win the 1989 Big Ten Championship. She will join former players Mary Ormsby (1977-80), Lisa Bettio (1982-85) and Karen Alsbrooks (1976-79) in the Hall of Fame.
NCAA HISTORY
Ohio State has appeared in 10-consecutive NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes have advanced to the regional level seven times and twice (1991 and 1994) has reached the national semifinals. Overall the Buckeyes have a 13-10 (.565) record in NCAA play. OSU’s trips to the national semifinals included regional championship wins over Nebraska and Long Beach State on their courts.

Purdue has dropped four of its last five matches. The Boilermakers top hitter is Aneska Arosarena with 493 kills (4.70 per game). Purdue’s top percentage hitter is Connie Paul at .299. Taryn Catlin quarterbacks the offense and has 1,368 assists (13.28). Arosarena is the team leader in ace serves with 33 with Julie Doud having 32. Defensively, Arosarena has a team-high 278 digs (2.65). Sarah Emke has a team high 112 (1.09) blocks on 11 solo and 101 assists.
Purdue, as a team, is hitting .234 and averages 16.71 kills per game. The Boilermakers average 2.42 blocks, 13.65 digs and 1.41 aces per game. Purdue opponents are hitting .236 and average 15.43 kills per game. They average 2.57 blocks, 13.52 digs and 1.40 aces per game.

Ohio State has a 28-25 lead in the series with Purdue. The Buckeyes have won 17 of the last 19 matches. Purdue stopped a 10-match OSU winning streak earlier this season. In Columbus, Ohio State is 14-6 and has won the last 10 matches played in St. John Arena.

Wisconsin has won its last five matches prior to playing at Penn State Friday. The Badgers are led on offense by Jenny Maastricht who has 368 kills (3.72 per game). Sherisa Livingston is second in kills with 294 (3.59). Kelly Kennedy is the top percentage hitter at .331. Running the offense is Lizzy Fitzgerald who has 716 assists (10.38). Maastricht is the team leader in aces with 35 with Ross second with 26. Defensively, Erin Byrd has a team-high 308 digs (3.14) while the leading blockers are Livingston with 128 (1.56) on 16 solos and 112 assists and Maastricht with 115 (1.16) with 11 solos and 104 assists.
Team totals show Wisconsin hitting .234 as a team and averaging 15.52 kills per game. The Badgers average 3.08 blocks, 15.14 digs and 1.72 aces per game. UW opponents are hitting .170 and average 14.21 kills per game. They average 2.19 blocks, 14.68 digs and 1.36 aces per game.
