Women’s Volleyball Defeats Iowa 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (15-9 overall, 9-8 Big Ten) women’s volleyball, behind 13 kills by Jen Flynn and 12 from Sue Calligaris, defeated Iowa 3-0 (15-6, 15-11, 15-6) Friday night in Iowa City. It was OSU’s fourth conference road win of the season and extended to three, OSU’s current winning streak. Iowa’s Katie Panhorst had a match-high 16 kills for the Hawkeyes with Jamie Lansing and Sara Meyermann adding 11 each.
Ohio State opened a 3-0 lead in game one off kills by Shelly Draeger and Rosie Snow and an ace serve by Jen Flynn. Iowa rallied to take a 4-3 lead on two OSU errors, a kill by Katie Panhorst and a block by Larissa Lopes and Panhorst. A Draeger kill tied the match at four but Iowa’ Sara Meyermann countered with a kill to give Iowa a 5-4 lead. An Iowa error tied the game at five, but a kill by Panhorst put the Hawkeyes up 6-5. An Iowa attack error allowed OSU to tie the game at six and started a nine consecutive point run by the Buckeyes. OSU’s Snow put the Buckeyes ahead with a kill at 7-6. An Iowa attack error and a kill by Suzie Stiling made it 9-6 as Iowa called time out. Snow’s ace serve, kills by Flynn and Stiling and an error by Iowa put OSU ahead 13-6 as Iowa called time out. OSU reached game point (14-6) on a block by Flynn and Stiling. A kill by Panhorst sided out to Iowa. An error on the serve by Iowa sided the ball back to OSU for its second game point. Jamie Lansing’s kill gave the ball back to Iowa. A kill by Sue Calligaris gave the serve back to Ohio State for its third game point which was won on an Iowa error, ending the game, 15-6. In the game, Ohio State hit .275 to Iowa’s .216.
The Buckeyes opened game two with a four-point lead off three kills by Jen Flynn and a block by Flynn, Suzie Stiling and Sue Calligaris. Katie Panhorst put Iowa on the board with a kill, but a block by Shelly Draeger and Calligaris put the score at 5-1. Iowa scored the next six points to take a 7-5 lead. Kills by Panhorst and Sara Meyermann and an OSU error closed the OSU lead to 5-4. Three OSU attack errors gave Iowa a 7-5 lead. OSU’s Calligaris cut the Iowa lead to 7-6 with a kill and Flynn’s kill tied the game at seven. A Hawkeye error put Ohio State ahead 8-7, but an OSU error tied the game at eight. Another Iowa error put OSU up 9-8 and a kill by Anne Botica extended the OSU lead to 10-8. Iowa cut the lead to 10-9 on an OSU error but a block by Draeger and Dana Stearns put OSU ahead 11-9. An ace serve by Draeger and an Iowa error extended the OSU lead to 13-9. A Buckeye error made it 13-10, while an Iowa error set game point for OSU at 14-10. The Hawkeyes stopped two game points and with a kill by Jamie Lansing cut the lead to 14-11, but OSU ended the game at 15-11 on a Calligaris kill. The Buckeyes hit .207 for the game to .208 for Iowa.
With Ohio State up 1-0 in game three, a kill by Jamie Lansing tied the game at one. An ace serve by Nikki Cisco, a kill by Dana Stearns and a block by Stearns and Anne Botica gave OSU a 4-1 lead as Iowa called a time out. The Buckeyes led 5-1 on an Iowa error, but the Hawkeyes scored on kills by Sara Meyermann (twice), Jill Schmidt and Bridget Frideres to tied the game at five. OSU’s Katie Virtue served back-to-back ace serves to give OSU a 7-5 lead. A Hawkeye error, a kill by Suzie Stiling and another ace by Virtue pushed the OSU lead to 10-5 as Iowa called time out. Jen Flynn’s kill along with an Iowa error pushed the led to 12-5 for Ohio State. Flynn’s ace serve made the lead 13-5, but an OSU error cut the lead to 13-6. After several side outs a kill by Anne Botica set match point at 14-6 for Ohio State with a Hawkeye error ending the game at 15-6. The Buckeyes hit .472 for the game to .351 for Iowa.
Ohio State hit .299 for the match to .254 for Iowa. The Buckeyes had a 57-50 advantage in kills. OSU collected six blocks to two for Iowa and had a 41-40 edge in digs. The Buckeyes served eight ace serves in the match while yielding none to Iowa.
Ohio State faces Minnesota Saturday in Minneapolis in OSU’s final regular season road match.
