Women’s Volleyball Goes On The Road To Face Iowa and Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State, offensively, is led by Rosie Snow who averages 3.80 kills (312) per game. Jen Flynn ranks second with a 3.12 average on 265 kills. Sue Calligaris is the team’s top percentage hitter at .333 with Dana Stearns second at .321. On the serve, Flynn has a team-high 24 aces with Snow at 20 aces. Setter Katie Virtue is averaging 12.96 assists per game on 1,037 assists. Defensively, Snow has a team-high 221 digs (2.70) with Flynn second with a 2.47 average (210). Suzie Stiling (10-64, .85) has a team-high 74 blocks and Stearns is second (3-50, .76) with 53 total blocks.
As a team, Ohio State is hitting .243 and averaging 16.63 kills per game. OSU averages 2.18 blocks, 13.58 digs and 1.42 aces per game. Buckeye opponents are hitting .206 and average 13.99 kills per game. Opponents average 2.53 blocks, 11.76 digs and .99 aces per game.
BIG TEN WEEKEND SWEEP
With wins over Michigan State and Michigan, Ohio State completed its first weekend sweep of Big Ten opponents this season. OSU had split the six previous weeks after losing to Michigan and Michigan State in the opening weekend of the Big Ten season.
2-0 GAME STARTS EQUALS WINS
Ohio State is perfect when it wins the first two games of a match. The Buckeyes are 11-0 with wins in games one and two.
IMPROVED BLOCKING
Ohio State had a season-high 28 assist blocks against Michigan State. Those along with two solo blocks produced a team-high 16 blocks, the best performance for OSU this season.
FLYNN MOVES IN CAREER NUMBERS
With a weekend total of 14 digs and 10 assist blocks, Jen Flynn has moved up in both categories on the Ohio State career list. Her 14 digs gives her 1,088 career digs and moves her into seventh place, passing Carrie Leonard (1991-94) who has 1,077. Flynn’s 10 assist blocks gives her 231 career assist blocks and moves her to eighth on the OSU career list. She passed Kristi Neuman (1983-86) with 222 and Sara Daniel (1991-94) with 230. Flynn collected six of her 10 assist blocks against Michigan State, setting season highs for assist and total blocks. SNOW 16TH IN CAREER DIGS
With a combined 24 digs last weekend, Rosie Snow now has 880 digs for her career. She now ranks 16th on the OSU career list, passing Audrey DiPronio (1988-90) with 850.
STEARNS NOW 8TH IN CAREER BLOCKS
Dana Stearns tied her career-high for assist blocks with nine against Michigan State last weekend giving her 279 for her career. She passed Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) to move into eighth place on the OSU career list. Jobst had 277 total blocks.
STEARNS ADVANCES IN CAREER KILLS
With 22 kills last weekend, Dana Stearns has collected 904 for her career. She moved into 13th on the OSU career list passing Vicki Wright (1983-86) with 895 and Carrie Leonard (1991-94) with 902.
BOTICA IMPACTS BOTH MATCHES
Coming off the bench in both matches last weekend, Anne Botica had an impact in the wins against Michigan State and Michigan. She had 12 kills, three digs and a solo blocks against the Spartans and had five kills, an ace serve and a season-high 11 digs against Michigan.
CISCO CONTRIBUTES AGAINST MSU
With a season-high 13 digs, defensive specialist Nikki Cisco contributed to the 3-2 win over the Spartans. Cisco also had an ace serve in that match.
VIRTUE TOPS 1,000 KILLS
With her fifth kill in the Michigan match, Katie Virtue reached 1,000 kills this season. She now has 1,037. Virtue becomes the 13th OSU player to reach 1,000 kills in a season and only the sixth to reach that mark in a career.
DRAEGER PROVIDES KILLS
With 11 kills against Michigan State and Michigan, Shelly Draeger provided solid offense in both wins. With her 10 kills the previous week at Indiana, Draeger has a three-match double-figure kill streak.
OSU 1-4 AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The upset win at Wisconsin marked OSU’s first win this season over a nationally-ranked squad. The Badgers were ranked 24th and OSU was unranked. Ohio State is now 1-4 against ranked opponents, losing to No. 20 @Michigan (2-3), to No. 1 @Penn State (0-3), to No. 23 Minnesota (2-3) and No. 1 Penn State (1-3).

Jim Stone is in his 18th year at Ohio State. He has a 395-178 (.689) record with the Buckeyes and is 226-97 (.700) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 10 years has only finished below third once. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 10 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 21-year career record is 445-220 (.669).
THE DEAN OF THE BIG TEN COACHES
Head coach Jim Stone begins his 18th-year in the Big Ten at Ohio State. Closest to Stone is Mike Hebert of Minnesota who is entering his 17th season. He spent 14 years at Illinois and the last three at Minnesota.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
The Buckeyes are scheduled for eight televised matches this season. OSU’s Nov. 5 match at Illinois will be carried by ESPN2. Broadcast of the match will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern. Ohio State also will take part in the Fox Sports Chicago Big Ten package. OSU’s match against Michigan Nov. 14 will be broadcast at 1:30 a.m. Eastern on Monday.
Ohio State also will have six matches produced by Central Ohio SPORT! Television. The following matches will be broadcasted by tape delay: Temple match Sept. 21 and 22, Illinois Oct. 5 and 6, Iowa Oct. 24 and 26, Penn State Oct. 28 and 29, Michigan State Nov. 13 and 14, Wisconsin Nov. 28 and 29. The matches will be replayed at 7 p.m. on Insight Communications (Ch. 36) and Time Warner (Ch. 24).
