Men’s Soccer Brings Home Big Ten’s Top Honors – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Big Ten Conference named both Ohio State’s men’s soccer coach John Bluem and Indiana’s head coach Jerry Yeagley 1999 Coaches of the Year. OSU’s John Tomaino (Fr., Palatine, Ill.) a midfielder, joins Bluem in receiving the 1999 Big Ten Freshman of the Year award.
This is Bluem’s first Conference Coach of the year since being named to the helm of the Buckeye program in 1997. Under his leadership, OSU entered the 1999 Big Ten Championships as the No. 2 seed, its highest seed in championship history. The Buckeyes top the league in points totalling, 143 in regular season and 42 in Conference play.
Tomaino made his presence felt quickly in the Big Ten. He ranked fourth on the points list with 22 for all games, tied for second in assists with eight and tied for fifth in goals with seven. ,p>
OSU had six players earn Big Ten honors. Three players were named to the first team, each receiving the honors for the second consecutive year. Brian Feldhaus (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Brooks Humphreys (Jr., Spring, Texas) and Chad Campbell (Sr., Waynesville,Ohio) were eached named to the first-team. Peterson Jerome (Sr., Spring Valley, N.Y.), Tomaino and Tony Monroe (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) each received second-team honors.
