Men’s and Women’s Swimming Dominate Over West Virginia – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s swimming teams had a double win against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Head coach Jeanne Fleck captured her first Buckeye win, 131-112. Head coach Bill Wadley’s 800 freestyle relay team set a pool record with a time of 6:46.66, leading the men to a 130-98 victory.
The men’s team swept the Mountaineers, improving to 2-0 on the season. Travis Carver (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.), Brian Malich (Jr., Mason, Ohio), David Paul (Fr., Holden, Mass.) and Matt Braun (Sr., Berkley, Mich.) broke the 1996 record of 6:47.35, set by Mull, Guibord, Bigler and Mills. Malich was a double winner for the Buckeyes in the 50 (20.73) and 100-yard freestyle (46.39).
The women’s team won eight of the 12 events, with senior Heidi Hazen (Mentor, Ohio) and sophomore Kristin Sander (Cincinnati, Ohio) leading the Buckeyes. Hazen finished first in the 100 freestyle (53.26) and was the third-leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:54.75). Sander was the final leg of the 400 medley relay and winner of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.16.
The men are back in action Friday, Nov. 19 against Miami (O.) at 6:30 p.m. in the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The women travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Nov. 19 to compete in a tri-meet with Clemson and Michigan. The Buckeyes face Cleveland State Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 5:00 p.m.(*) in the final home coed meet before the millennium.
*The time of the Cleveland State meet has been moved to 5:00 p.m. from 6:00 p.m.
