Volleyball Falls to Top-Ranked Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$ STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — No. 1 Penn State (11-0, 1-0 Big Ten) upended No. 14 Ohio State (7-3, 0-1 Big Ten) in front of 2,154 fans tonight in Rec Hall. The 15-1, 15-3, 15-3 victory was the third fewest points (7) ever allowed by Penn State in eight years of Big Ten play. Penn State extended its home court winning streak to 44 consecutive matches, to move into seventh place in NCAA history.%^$ %^$

%^$ “I thought we played as well as this team has played and we played hard,” noted Penn State head coach Russ Rose. “I feel good about getting this kind of effort in front of this size crowd. We executed the game plan well I dont know if weve ever hit .460 in the Big Ten, everything was working.”%^$ %^$

%^$ For the match, Penn State out-hit the Buckeyes .467 to -.038 and out-blocked Ohio State 11 to 3. The Lions were led by junior middle hitter Lauren Cacciamani (Paramus, N.J.) as she recorded match-highs of 12 kills and seven blocks. Junior outside hitter Carrie Schonveld (Portage, Mich.) and junior setter Bonnie Bremner (Lisle, Ill.) each added eight kills, while sophomore defensive specialist Kalna Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched a match-best nine digs.%^$ %^$

%^$ Sophomore outside hitter Angelee Abbring had five kills, three digs and two blocks and junior outside hitter Jen Flynn tallied five kills and five digs to pace the Buckeyes. Ohio State was handcuffed by the fact that senior starting middle hitter Brianne Spiers did not play due to an injury. Ohio State dug itself a huge hole at the start of each frame, falling behind 7-0 in game one, 11-0 in game two and 9-0 in the final frame. “We didnt play well at all tonight,” said Ohio State head coach Jim Stone. “Thats not to take anything away from Penn State, but we didnt stretch them too much.”%^$ %^$

%^$ The Nittany Lions hit the road on Friday for their road-opener at Minnesota. Penn State will battle the Gophers at 7:00 p.m. CDT in Minneapolis. %^$
