MADISON, Wisc. – In a battle between the No. 8 and 9 seeds, the Ohio State women’s tennis team upset Illinios 4-1 in the first round of the Big Ten Championships today. The two teams met earlier this year with the Fighting Illini taking a 4-3 win in Columbus.
Freshman standout Kristi Dascoli (Bradenton, Fla.) defeated Simone Kung of Illinois in two sets at the No. 1 spot. Dascoli improved her record to 24-9 and has gone 20-3 during the Buckeyes spring schedule. Dascoli’s high school and Ohio State teammate, Briana Harris (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.) won another team point for the Buckeyes at the No. 2 position, disposing of Stacy Shapiro, 6-3, 6-4. Dascoli and Harris also paired up to win the Buckeyes only doubles match on the day.
Also earning points for the Buckeye in the winning effort were Carolina Nahuz (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Monica Koplas (Jr., Scarborough, Ontario). Nahuz refused to let her final season as a Buckeye come to an end, winning in two sets to earn a team point for Ohio State. Koplas was awarded the victory by default because the Illini did not have a reserve to move up after Carla Rosenberg went down with an injury in doubles action.
The Buckeyes advance to the quarterfinals and will face top seeded Wisconsin tomorrow on the Nielsen Outdoor Courts at 10 a.m. Ohio State fell to the Badgers 5-2 in the teams previous meeting on April 12.
